Chapter 33 The chatter of the ballroom swelled and fell like a tide. Waiters drifted past with trays of champagne, couples spun gently on the dance floor, and the Carltons remained the glowing sun at the center of their universe. Annie, Becky, and Sussy were gathered at one of the round tables near the edge, plates of half-touched hors d’oeuvres in front of them. Becky had leaned back in her chair, eyes roving over the glittering scene. “Adrian and Damien,” she murmured, “they both look… off.” Annie followed her gaze.
