Kairos POV“Don’t answer that.”The words left my mouth before I could stop them.Seren stood still beside the riverbank, moonlight washing her face pale. Her eyes were fixed on the figure across the water. Not close. Not far. Just enough distance to make pursuit pointless and conversation deliberate.“I wasn’t going to,” she said.The figure smiled anyway.“You always do,” he called out. “Eventually.”The river slid between us, quiet and dark. No torches this time. No escorts. Just one man, standing like he had nowhere else to be.That was the new tactic.Presence without force.“What do you want?” I asked.He tilted his head. “That depends. Are you listening as her guard, or as yourself?”Seren shifted slightly. Not away from me. Toward me.“I’m listening,” she said. “Speak.”The man stepped closer to the water’s edge. He crouched, dipped his fingers into the river, then wiped them on his trousers like this was a casual meeting between old friends.“You released pressure,” he said.
