ADRIAN HALE POV “Damien, slow down please!” I gasped.“No slowing down,” he shot back. “Not tonight.”“You’re dragging me!”“I know.”“That’s not comforting!”“It’s not meant to be comforting,” he said, breath steady. “It’s meant to keep you alive.”We crashed through the forest, our footsteps loud, my lungs burning like someone had set fire inside my chest.“Damien, wait I can’t ”“You can.” His grip tightened painfully around my hand. “Adrian, keep up.”“I am keeping up! I’m literally dying but I’m keeping up!”“You’re talking,” he said flatly. “So you’re fine.”“Oh my God, this is not fine! Nothing about this is fine!”He didn’t answer. He just kept running, weaving between trees with the kind of speed that made him seem unreal.Behind us, branches snapped. Voices shouted. Someone cursed.“Damien, they're getting closer!”“I know.”“You keep saying that like it’s nothing!”“It’s not nothing,” he said. “It’s information.”“Information that should make you panic!”“I don’t panic.”“
