The moon hung high, silver and calm, spilling light across the pack house. Most of the pack members had gone to rest, but Kael’s feet carried him to the garden where he knew Elara liked to sit. His chest was heavy, his thoughts louder than the night crickets. He found her under the willow tree, her hands folded neatly in her lap, her face lifted toward the stars. For a moment, he only watched her from a distance, his heart torn. She looked so peaceful, so untouched by the dangers circling around her. Yet Kael knew the shadows better than anyone—he had lived in them, fought in them, and feared what they could do. Finally, he stepped forward. His boots pressed against the grass, soft but sure. Elara turned her head and smiled warmly. “Kael,” she said softly. “You’re awake late.” He nodded and sat a short distance from her, his strong shoulders casting a shadow in the moonlight. “I couldn’t rest. My mind is too full.” Her brow furrowed gently. “Worries about the rogues again?”
