Chapter 321

[Elara]Every minute feels like an hour. Every hour feels like a lifetime.Through the small glass window in the door, I watch as Cora’s little chest rises and falls with every breath she takes. Her tiny body is connected to so many tubes and machines; it breaks my heart over and over again just looking at it.Why? What did she do to deserve this? Why does a child so small have to go through something this painful and traumatic? Why is it that, even after I wish her good health and a long life first thing every morning, she’s still fighting just to stay alive?I press my palm flat against the glass, the cold surface stinging my skin, desperately wishing the glass wasn’t there at all. Wishing I could trade places with her, take every needle, every tube, every ounce of that silent suffering into my own body if it meant she could just wake up, reach for me, and come home.“Elara?”Damon’s voice comes from behind me, and for the hundredth time I admit to myself how much I hate him.Becaus

Chapter 322

Vera’s curious question reminds me of the day when I first learned about Cora’s condition. It was the day after her birthday.I remember the way everything seemed to come to a standstill for a whole minute. The way I felt so hurt and helpless, and so damn angry at the world. And once again, her question reminds me of how useless and hopeless Damon always made me feel. He never respected me as his wife. He only saw me as a woman who took care of his home and existed in the background simply because he allowed me to. In fact, if not for Cora, I have no doubt he would have divorced me years ago. He never wanted me in the first place. His eyes and heart were always on Hannah. Always. It’s funny how he hated me for conceiving Cora and Vera because, according to him, that was my ultimate scheme to stay married to him—to cling to him and his wealth. He hated me so much that sometimes his hatred for me would even spill over into the way he treated Cora. But look how the tables have turned now

Chapter 323

My heart skips a beat at her words. But then I remind myself that she’s just a child. She probably doesn’t know that, save for some rare cases, a person can’t possibly have two hearts.I kiss the backs of her hands and smile. “I know you want to help your sister, Vera. And I’m so proud of you for caring so much about her. But you only have one heart in your body, and you need it to stay by Mommy’s side forever.”“But, Mommy—” she begins, when Damon comes rushing in.Vera and I look up at the same time, wondering why he looks as white as a sheet.“Something’s wrong,” he sputters. “The machine. It’s beeping erratically.”My heart stops. “Cora?”Damon nods, already turning toward the hallway. “Come on.”He doesn’t have to say. I’m out of the chair before he can say anything else.Vera jumps to her feet behind me. “Mommy?”I simply pick her up and run towards Cora’s room.By the time we make it to Cora’s room, there are already two nurses rushing inside.“What happened?” Damon demands.Ne

Chapter 324

[Griffin]I blink. Then I blink some more.“Uh, I might not have heard you right. Can you repeat that?”Vera only shrugs. “I want you to put one of my hearts inside Cora.”“But you don’t have two hearts.” No one can. Unless you’re an anomaly. Or a rarest of the rare case. And I’m not the kind of person to believe in such chances. “Besides, if it’s Cora you’re worry about then you don’t have to. She’ll be fine. The heart we have arranged for her is almost here. I’m very positive that we might be able to save her before it’s too late.”“You don’t sound so sure.” She says and I hate that she sounds like this second voice in my head. The voice that’s always full of gloom and doom. “I sound as sure as any doctor in this predicament would. Now, come on…” I reach for her hand and try to take her back to Elara. “Your mom would lose it if she realizes your not around.”However, before I can grab her arm she steps back and frowns. “Not before you agree.”I close my eyes and take a de

Chapter 325

[Elara] “How long before the heart gets here?” Damon asks for the hundredth time. “I don’t know,” I tell him, even though I want nothing more than to be left alone and not asked that damn question every ten seconds. “Give me your phone.” He frowns, but he doesn’t argue. By now, he should know that I misplaced my phone. I’d started to think I’d lost Vera, too, but a nurse came to us a while ago to inform us that she was with Griffin. He unlocks his phone and hands it over without a word. I take it, my fingers trembling slightly as I tap out Griffin’s number. I press the phone to my ear, listening to the long, hollow rings echoing on the line. One ring. Two rings. Three. He doesn’t pick up. I pull the phone away and glare at the blank screen before trying again. Still nothing. Where is he? A nurse said Vera was with him, but why isn’t he answering? He knows every second counts right now. He knows I’m losing my mind waiting for news about Cora’s replacement heart. I h

Chapter 326

[Damon]Elara’s words feel like a knife, cutting through my chest and stabbing me right where it hurts.I should have known this was coming. In fact, I already knew.I just had to ask. I needed my heart and my brain to hear those words coming out of her mouth, to know that this was actually, finally over. She was done with me for good.“Does that mean you’re with Griffin now?”I look away once again, feeling the pain in my chest grow until it threatens to drown me.She doesn’t answer. And she doesn’t have to. I already know that.Still, some stupid, stubborn part of me waits for her to say something. Anything.Maybe I’m hoping she’ll tell me there’s nothing between them. Maybe I’m hoping she’ll give me some tiny piece of information I can hold on to and convince myself that I’m not completely out of the picture yet, even though she has made it absolutely clear that there’s no place for me in her life anymore. But a heart wants what it wants, right?Next to me, Elara sighs deeply. “No.

Chapter 327

[Elara]Two hearts.Just thinking about it gives me shivers. Not because the reality of it terrifies me, but because it should be impossible. How can someone even have two hearts? Have I read something about this before? A similar case of a human born with two separate but perfectly healthy, functioning hearts? No. I didn’t. Not in my lifetime. But yes, there have been rumours. Stories. Something you hear, marvel at, and then forget. But this…this isn’t some rumour. Or story. This is real. As real as it can be.I stare at Vera’s scans and run my fingers across them, wondering if this is what people call a miracle. Being someone who believes in science more than anything, is this the turning point in my life where I start believing that something else exists too? Something that’s all too powerful and capable of making such miracles happen?I vaguely remember the time when Mom and Dad took me to that temple—the one the Gordons usually went to pray for their ancestors—and told me how, th

Chapter 328

“I just have one condition,” I say, watching Griffin’s face tighten with worry and curiosity. “I want you to lead the surgery.”“No!” Damon shouts from behind me, his footsteps rushed and heavy as I hear him moving closer. “Anyone but him. Did you already forget? He has been suspended. He can’t even touch a patient, let alone perform a whole damn heart surgery.”“I don’t care.” I really don’t. If there’s one person I can trust with this kind of surgery, it’s Griffin. He has never disappointed me in the past. Never. My heart tells me that if he’s in the room, leading the whole team, there’s nothing that can go wrong. Besides, I know he loves my daughters. And that love alone is enough for him to give them his all. He wouldn’t let anything happen to them. Nothing at all.I lean forward and hold Griffin’s hands in mine. “Just promise me that you’ll do your best. You’ll do everything there is to save them, and if…” I don’t want to say it. I can’t. But as a scientist myself, I know bad thi

Chapter 329

[Elara]The surgery goes on for nine long hours. However, when the doors of the OR finally open, my heart nearly leaps out of my throat.I rise from my chair faster than I have ever moved, blocking the path of the nurse who just came out.“How’s Cora?” I ask, unable to help myself. It feels like if I have to wait even a second longer to know how the surgery went, my chest will explode. The nurse looks at me, half of her face covered by the surgical mask. “I think…I think you should wait for the doctors to give you that information.”“I just want to know if the surgery was successful or not.”She looks around, as if hoping to avoid the question. “I…I think you should really wait for the doctors. They would be able to explain everything far better than I can.” She steps back and almost runs down the hallway.“Just tell me if my daughters—” I’m shouting behind her back when someone grabs my arm and yanks me around.Damon comes into view, looking angry as hell.“Are you happy now?” he roa

Chapter 330

[Elara]When Cora and Vera are finally shifted to the private room, I’m the first person to visit them.“My babies.” I kiss their foreheads one by one, tears running down my face. “Mommy missed you so much. Are you both feeling okay? Anything uncomfortable? Let Mommy know right away.”“I’m fine, Mommy,” Cora says sluggishly, her eyes barely open, though a soft frown is tugged at the corner of her mouth. “But why’s Vera here? Is she sick too?”I’m about to explain the whole thing when Vera beats me to it.“I’m fine. You should rest.”“But what happened to you?” Cora insists on knowing. But I can see Vera’s face. She seems uncomfortable sharing the truth right now.“She got a little cold, that’s all,” I say and watch as Cora slowly blinks. “Sometimes it gets colder than necessary.”Vera gives me a small understanding nod before closing her eyes and going back to sleep, just like Cora.Only an hour has passed when Griffin finally arrives. The moment he enters through the door, I launch o
