Sara sat half-dozing after her meal. She had prepared macaroni and cheese for the day that morning. She had not eaten much at breakfast, and she had made up for that at lunch. Sara made a cup of coffee, hoping the caffeine would wake her up a little. She nearly chugged the first cup before making a second. As Sara listened to the rain, a noise on one of the shelves caught her attention. She watched it intently for movement, expecting to see a mouse. Instead of seeing a rodent, she heard the distinct sound of breaking glass. Sara got up and cautiously made her way the short distance to the shelf. She began to peer into the wooden boxes and quickly discovered the sound had come from the jar that contained the willow bark shavings. It had inexplicably broken into several pieces. Sara could feel her pulse quicken. There was nothing that could have caused that jar to break. She tried to be rational and think of a reason why it would, but she came up with nothing. Sara woke up from her nap and stretched, breathing a sigh of relief that her headache was gone. She could hear the buck she called Ted snorting and banging at the door. She had closed the door and tied it shut while she slept. “I hear you! I hear you!” Sara yelled to the buck. She got out of her sleeping bag and stumbled her way to the door, still groggy. She loosened the paracord and retied it before allowing the door to open. She did that as an added precaution in case it was not Ted outside. Sara peeked through the crack in the door to see the deer standing at the doorway with rain dripping off his antlers. She shook her head at him. Sara laughed, “You silly deer. Why don’t you go find a place that’s dry to hang out?” Sara opened her mouth to say something else but was interrupted by her phone ringing. When she picked it up off the table, she saw it was her husband, Kevin, making her smile. “Hello,” she chirped when she answered the phone. “Hello, Babe. How are you doing? S

Sara sat at the table, picking the raisins out of her bag of trail mix as she snacked and made a little pile of the fruit. The thought of having a heavy meal or anything with meat in it made her stomach do somersaults. She picked a few more raisins out of the bag before raking them all into the palm of her hand. She got up and headed for the door to give them to the deer she called Ted as a treat. “Are you there, Ted?” Sara asked before she peeked out the door. She was greeted with the customary snort as the deer continued to lie against the cabin door. She laughed, “Of course you’re there. Where else would you be?” Sara gently held her hand out to the deer through the crack in the door. The buck happily and quickly nibbled the raisins from her hand, tickling her as he did. “You are such a good boy. I wish I could take you home with me,” Sara told him. The deer responded by flicking his ears and nuzzling her hand, raking his antlers against the cabin in the process. Sara laughe

Sara marked her place in the journal, downed the rest of her coffee, and stood to make a fresh cup. The squeak of her chair on the floor was met with a snort outside the door. Sara started laughing at the buck who had become the self-appointed guardian of the cabin door. “I hear you, Ted, I hear you,” Sara called out to the deer. “I am not supposed to feed you, so quit asking. And don’t you have deer things to be doing, like finding a nice dry place to sleep tonight?” Another snort and the grating of antlers on the door was the response. “You are so weird,” Sara muttered barely above a whisper. After dipping a cup of hot water from the pot on her camp stove, Sara went back to the table, sat, and looked at her cup. She had thought she wanted coffee, but now she wanted something different. Sara had finished her snack and felt better after texting with her husband. Another wave of thunderstorms had rolled into the area, and thunder was rocking her shelter. She was settling in to continue reading when a scraping at the door broke her train of thought. “Ted? Is that you?” Sara asked hesitantly. A snort came from outside the door in response to her question. Sara went to the door and peeped out. She did not see the deer through the small opening she had secured. She untied the door and looked out. She saw the deer nestled beside the cabin, partially under the tarp she had set up to collect drinking water. “Ted,” Sara said through clenched teeth. “If you tear down that tarp, I swear I will turn you into a buckskin jacket.” Sara watched the buck as he gave a little huff and carefully bedded down under the tarp, not touching it. Sara shook her head as she stepped back inside, out of the rain, and tied the door back in place. She brushed the rain off herself as she sat dow
