Chapter One Hundred-Thirty-One

The next day, Prue dragged Nate to a women's refuge. She didn't try and escape which made him as suspicious as hell. The building looked like shit from the outside. High concrete walls topped with razor wire, paint peeling in the tropical heat, an iron gate that had seen better decades. Not exactly the kind of place Nate wanted to take an ambassador's daughter, but Prue had worn him down over breakfast with that stubborn look he was starting to recognize."Few hours. I don't like this side of town," he said as Jon pulled up to the gate. "Then we're gone.""We'll see," Prue said, already reaching for the door handle. He caught her wrist. "Only a few hours, Prue. I mean it."She looked down at his hand on her arm, then back up at his face. Something flickered in her eyes that made his pulse kick. "You keep touchin' me like that, Nate, and I might start gettin' ideas."He released her like she'd burned him. Fuck. She was doing it again.A woman opened the gate after he showed his credenti

A third man came at her with a broken bottle. Prue sidestepped, grabbed his wrist, and twisted until he dropped the weapon. Then she drove her knee straight into his gut with enough force to lift him off the ground. He folded, gasping, and hit the dirt. She was doing great, but he was also glad the men weren't trained in fighting, because she could still get hurt."Prue!" Nate shouted, clearing two more attackers. "The car!"She looked at him, looked at the chaos around them, but then shook her head. "We can't leave them!""What?" Nate put down another attacker with a sharp jab to the throat."These women, the children. We can't just leave them here!" Prue was backing toward the main building, still holding her wooden spoon like a weapon. "Agnes, is there a back way out?"Fuck.Agnes, who was trying to corral panicked children, pointed toward the rear of the compound. "Through the kitchen, there's a gate to the alley!"More attackers kept pouring through the front gate. This wasn't dyi

Prue stared at the phone in her hands, the silence stretching between them as Jon navigated through increasingly chaotic streets. Smoke was rising from several directions now, thick black plumes that stained the sky. The sound of sirens seemed to come from everywhere at once, mixed with shouting, breaking glass, the distant pop of what might have been gunfire."He'll be fine," Nate said quietly. "Embassy security is top-notch. They've planned for this type of thing. This isn't the first time something like this has happened in PNG.""You don't know that. You can't promise he's okay." Her voice was steadier than he'd expected. No tears, no hysteria. Just cold, hard worry. "You don't know my father. He'll try to help everyone else before he thinks about gettin' himself to safety."If he was anything like his daughter, then she was most likely right."Boss," Jon called from the front seat, tension tight in his voice. "Road ahead's blocked. Burning cars."Through the spider-webbed windshi

More shots punched through the vehicle. The windshield of the SUV completely disintegrated. Jon was driving half-blind, blood running down his face from glass cuts, weaving between abandoned cars and debris.Behind them, the shooting was getting worse. Whoever had been firing from the building was now in a full firefight with the remaining fake cops. More muzzle flashes appeared in other windows. This was organized warfare in the streets. No one seeing this would guess that this morning all had seemed calm, tense, but calm."Are you sure about the airport, Nate?" Jon called back, having to shout over the wind rushing through the broken windows."Yes. I can get us out if we can just get to the airport," Nate said. The road to the Kokoda airstrip stretched ahead through thick jungle, seeming almost to quite after the mayhem they'd left behind. Jon navigated around fallen branches and the occasional abandoned vehicle, the SUV’s engine running steady despite bullet holes that peppered the

They’d been walking for maybe forty minutes when Nate started to worry. Not about the jungle, or the distance to the airstrip, or even the possibility of pursuit. He was worried about Prue. She hadn’t said a word since they’d left the SUV. Not one. Just followed behind him through the undergrowth, stepping where he stepped, ducking under branches when he held them back for her, moving like she was on autopilot. She was too quiet. Way too quiet for a woman who’d been chattering and pushing his buttons non-stop for the last few days.Where was the girl who’d escaped through a bathroom window, who’d taken down attackers with kitchen implements, who hadn’t screamed while bullets were flying around them? That girl had gone silent. And that worried the hell out of him. Before he could stop to check on her, a low rumble rolled across the sky above the jungle canopy. He looked up through the thick green cover and saw dark clouds building fast, the kind that meant serious weather was coming."

She finished the bar with visible effort she clearly hated it, washing it down with water, then finally looked around their makeshift shelter properly for the first time. The cave was small, cramped, and about as far from the luxury hotel, they'd left this morning as you could get. The ceiling was just high enough for him to stand, and the walls were rough stone that wept moisture in the humid air."Are we really spendin' the night here?" she asked, taking in the rough stone walls and the sleeping pad that looked barely big enough for one person, let alone two.Nate gestured toward the cave entrance, where rain was coming down in sheets so thick they could barely see the jungle beyond. Lightning flickered almost constantly now, followed by thunder that seemed to shake the mountain itself. "We can't trek in this. And even if it stops in a few hours, the jungle floor's going to be too dangerous to cross. Streams will be rivers; everything will be slick as hell." He leaned back against t

Her mouth curved. "Where exactly would I go? It's not the weather for a stroll."He gave her a look that communicated, very clearly, that they both knew nothing was beyond her. Which she had proven more than once.Outside, the rain hit him immediately despite the poncho, finding every gap at collar and wrist. He moved to the far side of a second tree, giving her the same distance and privacy he'd promised himself he would give her. When he was done, he stood for a moment in the driving rain, letting the cold water hit his face, and gave himself thirty seconds to be honest. She was twenty years old. She was his principal. She was the Ambassador's only daughter; she was off limits. But in the last couple of hours… who was he kidding? Since he met her, the reasons had become less convincing.Thirty seconds was up.He went back inside. She had already settled back onto the pad, the emergency blanket pulled up to her chin, watching the rain with the kind of quiet that still didn't sit enti

Chapter One Hundred-Thirty-Eight

Because the moment Prue's lips parted beneath his, the moment her fingers curled into the front of his shirt and pulled rather than pushing, the comfort became something else entirely. Something that had been building since the first time they had met, even if he hated to admit it.He should stop. He was too old for her.But he didn't stop.Prue made a soft sound against his mouth, halfway between a sob and something hungrier, and it undid something inside him that he knew had been coming loose for days. His hand slid from her hair to cup the back of her head, tilting her, deepening the kiss before his brain could vote on the matter. She tasted like salt from her tears, and her, and he knew he had never tasted anything better in his entire life. She pressed closer, her body shifting against his on the narrow sleeping pad, her hand flattening against his chest like she needed to touch every inch of him, her palm settling over his heart. He pulled back just enough to look at her.Her ey

Prue's hips came off the pad. He held them down firmly, and she choked out a sound loud enough that it echoed off the cave walls, her hand slamming over her own mouth. He smiled against her, then set about absolutely dismantling whatever was left of her composure. He worked her slowly, learning the sounds she made and repeating what made them louder. Learning the way her thighs tried to close around his shoulders and then thought better of it. Learning the exact rhythm that made her fingers tighten in his hair and her breathing turn ragged and uneven. When he slid two fingers inside her, she went completely rigid, a long breathless sound escaping behind her hand, her inner walls gripping him so tight it nearly stopped his heart. She was impossibly tight. And responsive in a way that made his head swim. She was going to be just as wild in bed as she was in life.He worked her with fingers and mouth together, building her slowly, holding her back from the edge every time she got close,

Chapter One Hundred-Forty

Nate woke to grey light filtering through the cave entrance and the sound of water dripping somewhere outside. At least it wasn’t raining. No, that had stopped around 8:30 PM. He’d always enjoyed the day after rain, everything smelled fresh and new. But not when he was stuck in a fucking jungle, because today was going to be hot and steamy as the water rose up in the heat from the jungle floor. Glad they might only have to endure it for the morning and not through the heat of the day.He didn’t move for a moment, just lay there with Prue curled against his chest, her breathing deep and even, her hair spread across his shoulder. The emergency blanket had slipped down during the night, and he could see the curve of her bare shoulder, the freckles clear in the grey morning light spilling into the cave.If he could reach his own arse, he’d kick it.She was twenty years old. A virgin until last night. The Ambassador’s only daughter. And he’d taken her on a sleeping pad in the middle of a j
