The massive doors were still opening. The sound of polished mechanisms echoed softly across the grand entrance as the tall wooden panels parted slowly, revealing a glimpse of the interior beyond. Mercy stood frozen. Aurelian’s hand was still firm around her waist. But before they stepped forward, he turned her toward him. His hand left her waist and moved upward. He cupped her face, gently. It was unexpected. Her breath caught. His thumb brushed lightly against her cheek, grounding her before she could react. His green eyes locked into hers. “I have never begged for anything in my entire life,” he said quietly.
