A master is born a master. It’s a birthright.A vicarius isn’t. A vicarius is made.Among all the choices a master has, the one chosen to be second-in-command is the one who proves himself the strongest and most loyal to the clan. That’s why it’s the greatest honor among us.I became a vicarius. And I’ll do anything for my clan.—-----------// --------------Her scent hits me like a punch to the gut on a random Wednesday. AB-, unmarked. So sweet and tempting it’s almost violent.I’m about to let her into the club and introduce myself when the sharp metallic crack of gunfire cuts through the music and chatter of Nox.One of the bullets ricochets off the steel door. Quartz.Sentinels — damn hunters. Now that’s what I call a warm welcome to the city.I catch her as she faints, her limp body collapsing against mine, and the way her delicious blood is wasted like that almost makes me growl. I carry her to the office and fight the urge to lick the wound on her arm. There might be traces of

— Where were you? — Cael asks, flat, leaning back in the leather chair where, in theory, I should be working. The coldness in his voice slams into my chest, and just the glimpse of his perfect face makes my whole body tremble inside. I swallow the words and keep my eyes on the floor.— I just took Lexi for coffee — Zara offers, unconcerned.— And you didn’t think it would be appropriate for her to put on some clothes first? His words cut through me, and I look up at him. The way Cael stares at me, eyes narrowed, sends heat creeping down the back of my neck. Shame and excitement at the same time.— She’s wearing more than I am.— I liked it. — Samiel’s voice is another jolt in the middle of my internal chaos. He’s perched on the edge of the desk, arms crossed, his huge body taking up too much space in the office. His gaze drops over me, slow and malicious, then returns to my eyes.My instinct is to pull the lycra dress down, but I resist. I won’t let him know how intimidated he makes m

I spent the entire day thinking about Brinna.I wish I could explain myself to her, but how do I tell her that my rare blood has become a passport into a world of vampires—children of fallen angels—without sounding as insane as my mother? How do I tell her she can’t be part of my life anymore because I don’t know how dangerous this world might become — and I can’t risk her getting hurt by the weight of my secret?I have no idea where Cael has been spending his nights, but the apartment is always stocked — for me.I have breakfast in the early afternoon and head downstairs, finding Samiel playing pool with Zara.Right now, I’m wearing one of Cael’s black cotton shirt — as a dress — and his boxer briefs as improvised shorts. A little too intimate for someone who’s never even slept with the owner of the clothes, but I didn’t have much choice.— Hey, sexy! — Zara grins wide.Samiel looks me up and down, a faint crease forming between his brows.— If you’re trying to shock with your outfit

The engine growls when I slam my foot on the accelerator. The road is empty, a thin strip of asphalt stretching ahead, and I have no intention of respecting the speed limit. The steering wheel vibrates under my hands; the machine itself seems to want more action, hungry for the same thing burning in my chest. It’s an hour and a half from here to the orphanage where Alexia was born, but in less than forty minutes I’m parking in front of its rusted iron gate, in the middle of nowhere.I touch the heavy chain locking it shut. It would be easier if I could just convince it to open, but my voice only works on the chimpanzees He created.I inhale sharply and snap the links with a single pull.Leaving without feeding was stupid — hunger makes me weaker, and angrier.Three floors of gray concrete, narrow barred windows — more prison than refuge for children. Just one look is enough to know she wasn’t lying about what she lived through here. But Lexi has no idea what’s inside me. Draven didn’t

Radja is on my lap. Beautiful, fragrant, perfect in every way — what humans would call flawless. And all I want is for her to get off me.She drinks from my wrist, grinds her ass against my hips, not even trying to hide what she wants. We’re alone in the office of Exilium, my other bar in the city. The space is large, and it almost looks like a pub itself — this is where Sami and I hold the clan meetings. The difference between this place and the facilities at Nox Trium is that only ours come in here.No humans allowed, but my victus.— Enough. — I pull my wrist from her mouth. I don’t want her drunk on too much of my blood. She turns her neck toward me, but I only set her on the seat beside me without answering.— Why? — The hurt in her voice is an irritating sting. — It’s because of her, isn’t it? The new girl. You barely touched me all week.I could tell the truth. That her hair is too straight, her eyes too light. That her skin doesn’t have the scent I want. That her blood doesn’t
