Elena’s POV"You're shakingAndrew’s voice dragged me out of the mist within my mind. We stood in Andrew’s chambers; he’d insisted that I come with him after the events at the border because my room wasn’t safe. His aroma enveloped me. Pine trees, the earth below them, and the distinctive scent that only Andrew possessed.”I'm fine,” I lied."No." His hands rested on my shoulders, their warmth seeping through the thin material of the dress I wore. "You almost died tonight. Again.""But I never did. That thing...not sure what it was, rescued me." I turned to look at him. "It keeps happening.""I don’t know. And right now I don’t care." His thumb brushed over my collarbone with the lightest of caresses. "All I care about is that you are here with me. Safe."A thrum of desire pulsed between me and the other werewolf. My wolf urged me forward, wanting to lean into the other’s touch and forget the world except the caress of his fingers on my skin."Andrew...""Tell me that you feel it too.

Elena’s PovSunlight seared my eyelids open. I groaned and turned over again, my hand landing on warm flesh instead of an empty bed.My eyes sprang open.Andrew rested beside me, elbow raised with elbow bent and arm propped on the elbow as if watching me with an intentness that made my stomach flip. His hair stood up in places and the dawn lighted the gold speckles of his grey-colored eyes.'Good morning,' he growled out roughly.'You said you'd sleep on the floor." This rushed out breathlessly."I tried." His finger drew languid patterns on my skin. "Got an hour into it until the bond started driving me mad. You were having nightmares. Crying out. I couldn’t." His jaw tightened as if the words cut at him. "I had to hold you."Memories flared up. Bad dreams of Kael’s touch on me, of being hauled across the border. And then the warmth of safety and the sound of Andrew’s voice murmuring with my hair until the dreams disappeared."And we..." I glanced down and was thankful that I remained

Elena's POV"You're staring."Andrew's voice pulled me from my thoughts. We sat in his private study, away from the pack, away from responsibilities. Just us and the crackling fireplace casting dancing shadows across the walls."I'm allowed to stare at my mate." I held up my hand, watching the moonstone catch the firelight. "My fiancé. My husband. Which title do you prefer?""All of them." He pulled me onto his lap in one smooth motion. "As long as they mean you're mine."His possessiveness should have annoyed me. Instead it sent heat pooling low in my belly. "Yours," I agreed softly. His eyes darkened. One hand slid into my hair while the other gripped my hip. "Say it again.""Yours." The word came out breathless. He claimed my mouth, kissing me deep and slow like we had all the time in the world. His tongue traced my lower lip and I opened for him, tasting whiskey and want. When his mouth moved to my neck, right over his mark, I gasped. The sensation shot straight through me, making

Elena's POV"That's impossibleThe words came out flat. Dead. Because my father was dead. Had been dead for years. Everyone knew that."I know what I saw," Marcus said firmly. "Three wendigos lugging a man. And he cried out your name. He said his name was Victor Torres.""Could be a trick. Kael trying another angle," Andrew's hand clamped firmly onto mine."Or worse," Rowan said softly. "Old magic can work terrible things. Bring the dead back to life. enact illusions. If Elena's Gifting is emerging...""I didn't do this."But then came the doubt. What if I had? What if this power that I hadn't been able to control had somehow extended itself and pulled something back from wherever the dead things went?"We must see him," Andrew decided. "But carefully. Elena stays behind me. If this is a trap...""I'm coming." The necklace was hot in my hand. "If that's really my father, I need to know."We made our way to the border. The whole pack had congregated there, keeping their distance from

Elena's POVI couldn't sleep. The images of Selene's cries ringing in my mind. The bloody finger clothed in cloth. The mysterious message about the wrong soul bearing the mark. They mingled together in my head to form some terrible dream from which there was no awakening.Andrew had insisted that I remain in his chambers again, but he was not there. He had left to mobilize the patrols, to question Selene again, to do everything an Alpha did when their pack members found themselves in inexplicable circumstances.I pided the room, the ring heavier on my finger as I moved from step to step. Was it cursed? Was that why the wendigo had taken Selene's finger? Because she had been wearing a copy?None of it made sense. My restless feet had me wander over to Andrew's bookshelf. Truthfully? Before this situation, of which everything was inexorably falling apart as it seams, I hadn't noticed them before. However, at the moment when neither sleep nor sitting still was possible, a scan of the boo
