Liam’s house was nice, really nice in a way that was quiet and comfortable, not flashy. It was a large, modern home in a good neighborhood, with a big, open-plan living room that always smelled faintly of the lemon-scented cleaner the housekeeper used. The furniture was expensive but chosen for comfort: a huge, soft sectional sofa, a thick wool rug, and shelves filled with a mix of books, family photos, and Liam’s extensive sneaker collection. They were sprawled on that rug, surrounded by a chaos of shopping bags from their trip to the mall. New shirts, a couple of pairs of jeans, and a jacket Liam had insisted on were scattered around them. For the last ten minutes, Nate had been silently folding and refolding the same pair of dark-wash jeans, his movements automatic. His mind wasn’t in the clean, safe living room.
