Chapter Fifty-Four Liana’s POV The knock came before dawn. Soft at first, then firmer like whoever stood outside already knew I would be awake. I rose slowly from the floor, my limbs heavy, the taste of salt still on my lips. The candle by the mirror had burned itself out hours ago, leaving only the faint grey light of morning to touch the walls. I didn’t bother to fix my hair. There was no point. He would see what he wanted to see. He always did. The knock came again. “Your presence is requested in the throne hall, my lady,” a voice said through the door. It was one of the King’s attendants. Careful. Measured. A tone trained never to reveal anything. Requested. As if I had a choice. I drew my cloak around me, red over white, the silk cool against my skin. My hands trembled as I tied the clasp. The marks around my wrists had faded, but they were still there faint reminders that freedom in this palace was an illusion.
