The minutes stretched like hours. Gabriel sat stiffly on the floor of his office, Samantha cradled in his lap, shivering and slick with sweat. Her skin burned hot against his, each of her soft, panting breaths brushing against his throat like temptation incarnate. Her heat had only intensified. She whimpered again, curling tighter into his chest. He clenched his jaw as his wolf howled beneath the surface, demanding—take her, mark her, now. No. He couldn’t. Wouldn’t. She didn’t even understand what this was. Not fully. She hadn’t been prepared. Her body responded instinctively, and the pull between them was undeniable, but that didn’t make it right. “Samantha,” he whispered, brushing a damp strand of hair from her cheek. “I’ve got you. Just breathe.” She let out a soft cry, writhing helplessly in his arms. “It hurts, Gabriel. I—it hurts so much.” His heart cracked. “I know.” His voice was gravel. “I’m sorry.” Her fingers dug into his shirt, clinging to him like a lifeline.
