LUCIA~I woke up to the chill of damp earth pressing into my back, my lungs pulling in the air that tasted like wet pine and regret. No more thunder, just a fine drizzle sounding on the leaves overhead, like the world was too tired to weep anymore. My body felt really light. It was as if the storm had drained every ounce of strength in me. I blinked against the light of dawn filtering through the trees, and then I saw Jenny. She was crouched by the wrecked tree line, her eyes scanning the area. Her tablet flickered in her hands, static crawling across the cracked screen."Anything?" My voice came out rough from screaming into the wind last night. She didn't look up, just swiped at the screen with a frown."Pack signal's glitchy as hell. Storm residue's frying the circuits. Give it a minute."Her fingers tapped impatiently, the device flickering like it was fighting her. "You okay? That was... intense."I pushed myself up on one elbow, wincing at the ache in my ribs. The bond in my che

LUCIA~By the time we got to the packhouse, the light of dawn was now slowly spreading across the sky. The drive the valley was quiet. None of us said anything. Thankfully, when the storm eased, one of the scouts’ who had been trying to locate me found us on the border, and they came with an SUV.Julius’s hands rested on my lap, he held me so close, like he was going to lose me again if he let go. When the gates of the packhouse came into view, I almost didn’t recognize them. They looked tall, with silver-gray steel and rune engravings that pulsed faint blue. Home had always looked like strength to me, solid, safe, and unmoving. Now, it looked like a fortress built against something it didn’t understand. The guards straightened when they saw the SUV. They all looked relieved to see their Alpha. They bowed, but I saw it in their eyes, the questions they didn’t dare ask.We passed through without a word.Inside the walls, the world looked untouched. Glass towers, training yards, morning

LUCIA ~By the time I came down in the morning, Julius was already downstairs. The smell of coffee filled the air, sharp and grounding. He looked up when I entered and stopped scrolling through the reports.“Morning”, I said.“You’re awake early”, he answered.“So are you.”“I couldn’t sleep.”I poured myself a cup of coffee and sat opposite him. “You should sleep”He gave a laugh. “You’re one to talk. Anyway, I have some paperwork to attend to.”I smiled, “You will survive it.”He looked at me properly then. “You are quitter these days”“Would you rather I wasn’t?”“No, it’s just that…the silence feels unfamiliar.”“Maybe you are just used to fighting with me.”“Maybe I am…” he admitted. “You used to argue with everything I said, or did.”“Arguing didn’t change much”, I said, taking a sip of my coffee. “I am trying something new.”He laughed, rich and warm, but it didn't reach his eyes. I saw the flicker there, unease, masked as amusement. He leaned in, voice dropping."I like your f

JULIUS ~I sat alone in the dim glow of my desk lamp, reading the letter over and over again. The words seem to be mocking, the more I read them. You can keep pretending she’s yours. You’ll both learn soon enough. I wondered how he had gotten the letter down here. I mean, I had the best wolves on patrol. I crumpled the paper in my fist and struck a match, watching the flames dance before torching the paper. The ashes scattered across my desk like gray snow, but the words were still etched in my mind.I couldn’t tell anyone about the letter yet. Especially Julia. The mark on my palm throbbed whenever I thought about it. Maybe it was nothing more than guilt, but it felt alive, like a heartbeat that wasn’t mine.By morning I wasn’t feeling any better about the letter. I moved through duties on autopilot, signing off on supply runs, barking orders at the scouts."Tighten the western flank, eyes open, no slacking."They nodded, scattering like leaves. But my gaze kept drifting to Lucia, a

JULIUS ~I wanted to investigate any breach to our packhouse borders. The letter, the wooden carved message, they couldn’t sit well with me. I entered the forest with Axel and two elite guards, Thorne and Reyes.Axel walked ahead of ahead of me, and the other two stayed a step behind. The air was heavy with something I couldn’t quiet place my hand on. And it was also too silent. No rustle of leaves, no distant howls, just silence.“This area’s been quiet for weeks,” Axel said.“That’s what makes it dangerous,” I answered. My wolf senses were all fully alert, every nerve in my body on edge.He glanced back, reading the edge in my voice. “You really think he’d risk coming this close again?”Reyes chuckled, trying to ease the tension. “You two sound like you are waiting for something to jump out of the bushes. What has got you spooked, Alpha?”“I think Killian never left.” And that wiped the smile from his face.We went on to the ridge, the wooden post with the carved message coming into
