Charles’ POV The look on her face when I told her she would be working under me stayed in my head longer than it should have. Shock, disbelief, a quiet kind of dread she tried to hide behind composure. For a second, I almost laughed it off, almost told her it was a mistake, but I knew Damien too well for that. He did nothing without a reason. Assigning her to me was not coincidence, it was strategy, and knowing him, it was probably meant to drag me into something I had been carefully avoiding, actual responsibility. By the time I got to his office, that thought was already forming into irritation. I pushed the door open without knocking, the way I always did, ready to throw a comment that would annoy him just enough to get a reaction. “So, this is the trick now?
