Talon I was half asleep when my phone buzzed on the bedside table. I groaned, reaching for it and squinting at the screen. It was Viktor. At this hour? I sat up, rubbing my face with my free hand as I answered. “Yeah?” “Talon,” Viktor’s voice was urgent. “We have a problem.” I frowned, my tiredness evaporating instantly. “What’s goin’ on?” “Marco DeLuca,” Viktor said, the name hitting me like a punch to the gut. “He’s out.” I froze, my grip tightening on the phone. “What do you mean, out?” “He escaped,” he said, his tone grim. “Last night. I just received word. His prison transport was ambushed. Four guards dead. He is free.”

The next morning felt like the calm before a storm. I was uneasy, after the news from Viktor last night, but I knew it wasn’t just me. If Mike were alive and standing in this kitchen with us, he’d have definitely felt it in his bones. I gripped the edge of the counter as Laura poured coffee into two mugs. The kids were at the table. Scarlett was scrolling through her phone with one hand while she picked at her toast with the other. Logan was shoveling cereal into his face like he hadn’t eaten in years. That, at least, was typical. Shadow lay at their feet, his ears twitching with every sound. “You’re not goin’ to school today,” I said, my voice firm, cutting through the silence. Both kids froze, their eyes snapping to me like I’d just dropped a bomb. 

I stared at the shoe in my hand, the weight of it crushing me. My daughter’s shoe. She was here, and now she wasn’t.
