"She's stable," the doctor said quietly, watching Isaac's expression carefully. "There was a subchorionic hemorrhage. It's a clot that forms between the uterine wall and the placenta, and when it bursts, it causes heavy bleeding. It's not uncommon in the first trimester." The room felt colder than it should have. Isabel stepped inside with slow steps. The air smelled like cologne and linen, sharp and clean, like it hadn’t been touched by anyone else but him. Her hand hovered near her waist, awkwardly fidgeting with the hem of her sleeve. Across the room, Isaac was pulling a clean shirt over his head, the muscles in his back moving under the fabric as he finished buttoning the collar. She stared at his bedroom door with a frown before turning the knob to hers and heading in. The next morning, she didn’t go down for breakfast.
