Chapter Thirty-one: Tessa. After Mr, Randerson exchanged pleasantries, I tried to keep the conversation light as we strolled through the crowded room. The music was classical and the lights were slightly dimmed. "So, Jaime, what do you like to do in your free time?" I asked, attempting to steer the conversation towards business. "I'm a bit of a workaholic I'm afraid." Jaime replied smiling. "But I do enjoy attending events like this. It's always great to meet new people."I nodded, taking a slip of my drink. "I know what you mean. I've been trying to get my company more exposure in New York. Perhaps we could discuss opportunities" I asked, trying to sound confident. Jaime's expression turned serious as he eyed me from head to toe, and he leaned closer. "Tessa, I think you're lovely but let's be real. If you couldn't use your...gold digging abilities on the Carter Groups, I'm not sure it'll work on me."I felt a sharp sting from his words. I tried my best to keep my composure, b

I stood in my office, looking out the window as the city bustled below. My mind was focused on one thing, taking down Juliette without unnecessary trouble. I had a team of investigators watching her and digging into her past, and I was confident they'd uncover something that would destroy her reputation and get her out of my life. My assistant, Bridget, walked in with a stack of papers. "Sir, the latest financial reports are in. You've got an online meeting with the board in an hour to discuss the merger." I turned to her, my expression unyielding. "Thank you, Bridget. Also, get me anything you can on Ms. Moreau's family and their business dealings. I want to know if they are involved in anything...unsavoury." Bridget nodded. "Got it sir." As I scanned the financial reports, my phone buzzed. It was my private investigator. "Mr. Carter, I've got something on Juliette Moreau." he said, his voice low and serious. I walked over to my desk, my eyes narrowing. "What is it?"

When I came to, I wasn't in the club any longer. I was in a bedroom, lying on a soft scented bed. Owen was sitting beside me, his eyes watching me. "How are you feeling?" he asked, his voice gentle. I tried to sit up, but I felt very dizzy. Owen caught me and held me steady. "Slowly, Tessa." He said. "You need to take it easy." I looked up at him, feeling a mix of emotions. "How did you find me? Why did you help me?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. Owen's expression softened. "Because I won't let anyone hurt you. " I almost believed him. Before I could look for a comment to retort with, he stood up to leave. "Your friends are on their way here. They'll take care of you." With that, he exited the hotel room leaving me speechless again. I sat there for a moment, trying to process what had just happened. The room was quiet, except for the sound of the air conditioner humming in the background. I looked around, taking in the luxurious décor. The bed w

I dressed up and walked out of Tessa's house feeling slight satisfaction. I wasn't sure what would happen, but I had taken a leap of faith by asking her to continue with our contract, I knew it was the right thing to do. I had to keep pretending that I wanted her because of our business arrangement. I needed her by my side, as my partner, but I could not let her know that. Not after all I had done to her. As I got into my car, I couldn't stop smiling. Tessa's response had been somewhat positive. She hesitated but I could see the spark in her eyes. I wondered if she actually liked me. If she saw me as anything more than the cold CEO of the Carter Groups. Well, I loved her and if she really had feelings for me, I was going to make her fall in love with me. I pulled out of the driveway, lost in thought. I decided to take a detour through the park close by, enjoying the scenery and clearing my head. As I drove, I noticed a black SUV ahead of me, but I didn't think much ab

"Why is the gold digger here?" Evelyn spat. "Surprised to see me so soon?" I retorted, giving her a little smirk. Owen ignored us both and went to sit on his chair at the head of the table, signalling me to come sit by his side. After we had settled down, one of the board members spoke. His voice rough from old age. "Explain to us, Mr. Carter, what the girl that almost dragged our merger deal into the mud is doing here." Owen relaxed on his chair as he studied the faces of all six members present in the room. "Ms. Hayes and I are getting married, publicly." Gasps erupted around the room, Evelyn's own the loudest. "What? What about Juliette?" She asked, her eyes slowly assessing me again. "Juliette attacked me at the Grand Terminal, put our merger deal in danger by trying to expose the Cerberus case, tried to sabotage my relationship with my fiancée, and worse, tried to eliminate Ms. Hayes permanently." His eyes looked at his mother as talked, as if to make sure she grabbed
