Julian's POV That sentence suddenly made the atmosphere in the room colder.I didn’t deny it.“Maximilian wants to see his mother,” I replied. She smiled faintly, but the smile felt fragile.“And you want to see her too.”I didn’t answer.Because for the first time since this conversation started I wasn’t sure which answer was actually true.Ophelia lowered her head again.“I don’t want to be the one who gets in the way,” she said quietly. “I just-”She paused before continuing.“I’m afraid you won’t come back.”Her words left me silent.I wanted to say that it was ridiculous.I wanted to say that of course I would come back. But strangely, those words didn’t immediately leave my mouth.Because deep down even I didn’t know how things might change after today’s meeting.I looked toward the hallway leading to Maximilian’s room. The sounds of small objects being moved around were still coming from there.Tha

Julian's POV I couldn’t help a small smile at how serious he was.“Why white flowers?” I asked again.Maximilian thought for a moment before answering.“Because the teacher said white means peace.”His answer made my chest feel strange. This little boy didn’t even fully understand the adult world yet but his words felt more honest than many of the things happening lately.I looked at him for a moment.“Do you miss Mom Vivienne?” I asked softly.Maximilian nodded immediately without hesitation.“Yes.”Such a simple answer. But also very clear.I let out a quiet breath.“Me too,” he added as he carefully put the flowers back into his bag.I fell silent. For a few seconds we sat in a quiet that wasn’t uncomfortable. Then Maximilian looked toward the hallway toward Ophelia’s room.“Why is Mom Ophelia taking so long?” he asked.I glanced at the still-closed door.“Maybe she’s still getting ready.”“S

Julian's POV The trip that was meant to be easy became hard even before we left the city center. At first, everything went fine. The car motor buzzed softly, the road wasn’t very full and Maximilian sat in the back seat holding his white strawflower carefully. But the calm didn’t last long.“Julian, pu͏ll over for a moment.”I glanced at Ophelia. “Why?”“I need to use the restroom.”I made a face. We had just been going for like twenty minutes.“Can’t you hold it for a while?”She held her tummy with a hurt look. “I can't, I really need a pee.”I took a deep breath and drove to the closest gas station.Ophelia walked out with slow feet like she was in big hurt.Maximilian stared at her from the rear seat with a puzzled face.“Why is Mom Ophelia sick?” he asked.“She’s not sick,” I replied shortly.A little while later Ophelia came back to the car and we

Julian’s POVAfter a minute Ophelia settled back into the car.“We can go now," she said quietly. The car moved again.Ten minutes later.“Julian."I closed my eyes for a moment before turning to her.“What?"“I’m hungry."My grip on the steering wheel got tighter.“We just stopped."“But I’m really hungry," she said weakly. "Pregnant women are often like that."I let out a breath. I knew I had to be patient with Ophelia. All of this felt like too much.I pulled over again at a convenience store by the roadside. Ophelia bought some bread and a drink then returned to the passenger seat and ate slowly while the car continued moving.A minute later a small voice from the back seat made me glance at the rearview mirror.Maximilian was staring out the window with a gloomy expression.“Dad."“Yes?"“Why doesn’t Mom Ophel

Julian's POV Ophelia's face lit up a bit.“A. Fries.”I walked back to the counter. Ordered food for her. When I came back to the table a minutes later Maximilian had almost finished his hamburger. Ophelia was sitting there playing with her phone.I sat down again holding my cup of coffee that had almost gone cold. From where I sat I could clearly see how Ophelia stared at the tray that had just been placed on the table.Burger. Fries. Soda.As soon as the food arrived she immediately grabbed the burger. She didn’t wait. She didn’t say anything.Maximilian, who had almost finished eating, paused for a moment to look at her.The child didn’t say anything. His eyes followed every move Ophelia made with innocent curiosity.I watched silently.First bite.Second.

Vivienne's POV Since this morning, my heart has been doing more than it has to. Even while I sat on a small couch by the window, watching the waves run after each other behind the flat, the beat stayed the same quick, uneasy and somehow warm!Julian and Maximilian were coming today.I didn’t even know how I was to deal with them. How I should greet them. How I should act in front of the guy I had liked for many years, and in front of my own kid who I had tried so much to guard from the feeling of loss! This morning when Julian sent a brief note saying he would come with Maximilian I couldn’t sit still.I took my phone and opened a store app, getting stuff that could make them comfy later. Fresh fruits, frozen meals, bread milk and Maximilian's best snacks.I even got orange drink and cocoa stuff because those were things he would ask for a lot.Like a mom getting her house ready for the coming of her family.I shook

Vivienne’s POVThe words sounded simple. I tried to believe them.I stepped out onto the balcony for a moment letting the sea breeze brush across my face. It was cool. Carried that familiar salty scent that somehow felt calming. The ocean always made me feel alive even as my body slowly grew day by day.My phone suddenly chimed.I quickly grabbed it. It wasn’t a message from Julian, just the final delivery notification."Thank goodness."I went inside and adjusted the position of two empty glasses on the table as if it were something important. My hands trembled slightly.I didn’t know why I felt so nervous.Maybe it was because I was afraid of seeing Julian. Afraid of seeing his face and feeling something I should have already forgotten. Afraid of seeing the gaze that once made me happy and then hurt me.Maybe I was afraid Maximilian would hug me too tightly. I wouldn’t have the strength t

Vivienne's POV I put the food boxes on the dining table by the window. There was soup, fruit salad and soft foods that were good for my queasy stomach. I also chose foods that Maximilian could eat. When everything was ready I called them over. “Please eat. Sorry if it’s not fancy.” Julian came over first. His eyes changed when he saw the food I got. He looked surprised and guilty. “Vivienne. You didn’t have to do all this. You should rest, not cook.” I smiled a little. I tried to sound casual. “I just ordered it online. I didn’t cook. It’s really okay.” Before Julian could say more Maximilian sat down. Pointed at the food. His eyes sparkled. “Wow! Mom Vivienne got all this? Can I eat this?. This one? Can I have more if I finish?” I laughed softly. "You can just eat slowly.” Seeing his face made my tiredness go awa

Vivienne's POV I looked at Julian. His eyes were tired. They also had a lot of tension in them. I could see regret in his eyes. It was very clear. I shook my head slowly. "It's alright. You are here. That is enough. Lets eat," I said to Julian. I made myself smile. I did not want to make things more awkward. Maximilian picked up his spoon. He was very excited. "Mom Ophelia, come eat." He was being very innocent. Ophelia smiled a little. It was not a happy smile. She sat down for a moment. Then she raised her hand. She was saying no to the food. "I already ate. I am full," she said. Julian looked at her. He wanted to make sure she was okay. I could tell he was tired of dealing with her attitude I swallowed. "If you want some tea I can make i

Vivienne's POV Julian gave a smile and sat down to eat a little. For a moment it felt warm watching the father and son eating together at my table. It was like the family I once had. That warmth was disturbed by Ophelia sitting silently beside us. Her quiet rejection was hanging in the air. I tried to keep the atmosphere calm. I whispered softly to Maximilian "Eat a lot, Maximilian," as I stroked his hair. I tried to hold on to that moment. I was secretly hoping that this mealtime wouldn’t turn into a battlefield. I wanted today to be a day for my son, Maximilian. Maximilian continued eating with a smile that never left his face. His hands were messy with sauce and his cheeks were full. His eyes sparkled every time he discovered something new on the table. "Mom Vivienne, try this!" He pushed a small p
