Evelyn POVThe police station holding cell smelled of disinfectant, sweat, and urine.I sat on the thin mattress of the narrow bed, my back against the cold concrete wall, staring at the bars that separated me from freedom.Three days. I'd been here for three days. The red dress Belle had convinced me to wear was now wrinkled and stained. My makeup had long since smudged off, and my hair hung in limp strands around my face. I'd been allowed to wash my face and hands, but nothing more. The jail jumpsuit they'd offered me had seemed worse than wearing my own clothes, so I'd declined.I pulled my knees up to my chest, wrapping my arms around them, trying to make sense of what had gone so wrong. In my previous life, I was certain Isabella had tried to frame me for something at Margaret's birthday party, but not this. Not throwing herself into a table hard enough to draw real blood, and not creating such a dramatic, public scene that resulted in my arrest. What disturbed me even more was t

Adrian POVI stormed out of the car before it had fully stopped, my hands already working to loosen the tie that felt like it was strangling me. The fabric pulled free with more force than necessary, and I shoved it into my pocket as I headed toward the Whitmore Group building.Joshua's footsteps echoed behind me as he hurried to keep up. "Adrian, wait—""Find out who posted Evelyn's bail," I interrupted without turning around, “I want a name within the hour.""Adrian, calm down," Joshua said, finally catching up to walk beside me. "You're acting strange. Besides, Isabella didn't suffer any major injuries. A few cuts and bruises that needed some stitches. Evelyn shouldn't have been kept in holding that long anyway."I stopped walking so abruptly that Joshua nearly ran into me. I turned to face him, feeling anger pulse through my veins. "I'm supposed to be the one who decides when she gets out. I'm the one who had her arrested. I should have been the one to decide if and when to drop t

Evelyn POV"How are you paying, ma'am?"The cashier's question pulled me out of my thoughts. I stared at the membership fee glowing on the screen in front of me. Twelve thousand, five hundred dollars and my stomach twisted.I leaned forward and lowered my voice, trying to sound casual even though my heart was pounding. "Can I pay in instalments? Maybe like three or four times?"The woman's face didn't change. "No, you cannot, ma'am."Then she said it. Out loud, loud enough for everyone in the lobby to hear."If you cannot afford—""Then card it will be," I said quickly, cutting her off before she could finish humiliating me. I gritted my teeth so hard my jaw ached, then pulled out my credit card and handed it to her with shaking fingers. A few months ago, this amount wouldn't have made me blink. It would have been nothing. But now? Now I was scraping together every penny I had to keep my father's company from drowning. I was basically financing utilities and other expenses with my s

Evelyn POV"Investor?"The word hung in the air like a stone dropped into still water, and I felt my entire body go numb as Vincent’s gaze shifted between us. I instantly felt helpless. If he knew the truth, that my membership here wasn’t for relaxation like I’d claimed and that I was really hoping to meet him, would he think I was using him?In a way, I was in the grand scheme of things, but I was also planning to help him, to warn him about the Imperial Crown Auction and to stop him from falling into Adrian’s trap like he had in my previous life.Vincent's eyes narrowed slightly as he looked at me, and I could see the moment realisation hit him. His expression changed. Just a little and enough for me to know that everything had shifted.I wanted to disappear. Right then and there, and I wanted to sink into the ground and never come back up, but before I could say anything, Isabella's voice cut through the silence. In fact, at this point, nothing I would say would change anything bec

Evelyn POV"I'm so sorry about what happened the other day. I didn't mean to send you off like that. It's just that Adrian was going to cause a big scene and—"I stopped mid-sentence and sighed in frustration, dropping my face into my hands. The words sounded hollow again, and the more I practised, the more cringeworthy they felt. I’d been rehearsing this apology since yesterday in at least a hundred different ways to apologize to Vincent, but every version made me look either weak, guilty or stupid.I sighed again and stared down at my feet.At the moment, Cedar Heights Golf & Country Club was the only place I felt safe in the entire city. Paparazzi weren’t allowed past the outer gate and another good thing was I could access the private lounges without anyone knowing.I could meet with people without worrying about being seen or photographed or having my business spread across social media. For someone like me whose reputation was currently rolling down a cliff, this place was a lif
