I had been so lost in my thoughts and hadn’t even heard the front door open. I asked the driver to pick them up from school because I had to meet with a lawyer earlier. I quickly wiped off my tears and cleared my throat. “No, I’m not crying… how was school today?” I asked, trying to change the topic. “School was great,” Jack responded. It felt like the whole world stopped for a minute. My chest tightened and I couldn’t breathe properly. “He’s just with his father, he’s okay to be okay,” I whispered as I tried to convince myself that it wasn’t the end of the world. “Jack is a big boy, he can take care of himself.” I stood there for a few more minutes before I turned around and made my way back to the house. I stopped at the kitchen and washed my face before going upstairs to meet Jade. Even when her brother was about to leave, she still didn’t come out of her room.
