We drove back to Castlewellan in silence. Adelie hadn’t said a word since I said I didn’t want to discuss my past, and I knew the mood was spoiled. I didn’t want to tell her about that because I didn’t like the person I used to be back then, a cold person, capable of killing someone else without warning, without cause. It didn't matter if they were criminals, they were still people whom I had murdered.“Do you want to stop for lunch or go back to the house?” I asked her as we entered Castlewellan.“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to spoil the day,” she said to me, and looked down. I could see the regret in her eyes and it made me feel guilty, because I had spoiled it, not her.“You didn’t. It’s just not something I’m proud of,” I said to her.“Will you tell me sometime in the future?” she asked me, and took my hand in hers.“Yes. One day,” I said to her. I was being honest. I would tell her, just not today, or even tomorrow. I’d just gotten her back and I didn’t want to spoil it with horror

We spent our days sight-seeing and visiting with Peter and Claire. I spoke to Kiran a few times and he only laughed when I told him about the locals of Castlewellan. I was eager to leave, and now I understood why Kiran never felt the need to return to Ireland. The people were great, a bit overboard, but still great. They refused to accept payment for anything. We stopped going to the stores and drove further away when we wanted to buy things. I took Adelie to the church where Kiran and Adara got married, and I felt drawn to the front of that altar. I stood there with my head lowered and took in the magnificence of the church. This is where Kiran took all of Adara’s pain; this was where he claimed her for the second time and got shot.“This place is magnificent,” Adelie whispered.“It truly does feel holy,” I said quietly. I looked at the steps, and for a fleeting moment, I could see Kiran sitting there, roughly the same age I was now.I didn’t want to linger anymore, and I walked outs

“He’s really beautiful, Kai,” Kiran said, as he held his grandson. Adara was crying while she looked down at him and tugged on Kiran’s arm. For the last half hour he had refused to give the baby to her.“Kiran, if you don’t give me that child right now, you can sleep in your study until the day you die,” Adara threatened him. He reluctantly handed him to her, and I saw the same look in her eyes that Kiran had just had in his.“I hope he’s just like you,” Kiran said, as he hugged me.“I wasn’t so bad,” I said, and he started to laugh.“I’m a grandmother,” Adara said softly, as she traced her fingertips over his face.“How’s Adelie doing?” Kiran asked me.“She’s resting for a bit, but she’ll be fine by tomorrow,” I said to him.“Soon we’ll be holding Saga’s baby too,” Adara said, and Kiran’s eyes turned darker.“Let’s not go there,” he said, and I laughed.“Why is it fine for your son to impregnate a woman before he’s married, but it’s not fine for Saga?” Adara asked him.“Because she’s

“Alpha Muradyan, you may commence,” Alpha Keller said again.“Alpha Bauer, from Austria, not guilty. Alpha Gomes, from Cabo Verde, not guilty. Alpha Osei, from Ghana, guilty. Alpha Ozola, from Latvia, not guilty. Alpha Khan, from Oman, guilty.” He sat down on his chair and shook his head as the Zetas took Alpha Khan away. They had been close friends.“Alpha Sinclair, you may commence,” Alpha Keller said, as he looked at him.“Alpha Santos, from Brazil, on August 31st of 2010, you ordered the assassination of your predecessor and his entire family, you are guilty, and so is your Zeta. Alpha Musa, from Nigeria, you are not guilty of murder, but you are guilty of supplying weapons to a militia force operating in your country, and they are guilty of murder. Alpha Diaz, from Argentina, you are not guilty of any crimes, and happy birthday to your daughter. Alpha Hassan, from Iraq, to list all your crimes would take me a week, you are guilty. Alpha Laurent, from France, you are only guilty o

“Where am I?” Malachi asked as darkness enveloped him.“This is the in-between, Malachi,” a voice said as he appeared in front of him.“Death,” Malachi said and he smiled.“We finally meet after all these years,” Death said, and two chairs appeared.“This is where you brought Kiran all those times to make him suffer,” Malachi said and sat down.“Kiran made his own choices in life. You should know better than anyone else that Kiran always follows his own head. All your actions have consequences, you know that, Malachi,” he said.“How long will I be here suffering your consequences?” Malachi asked, and Death laughed.“You have a pure heart, Malachi, and that makes this difficult for me, but certain choices were made, and now the final decision is in your hands,” Death said.“I don’t understand,” Malachi said.“When Kai died in Kiran’s place, Kiran begged me to take him and send Kai back. I did it without even thinking because I’ve never seen love as I have with Kiran. The love he has fo
