My palms were sweaty even before I opened my eyes, and when I did, all I could see was the same ceiling above my bunk — massive, gray, and lifeless, just like everything else here. Across from me, people were already moving. Some looked like they hadn’t slept at all, their eyes hollow, bodies twitching with paranoia. Others ate in silence, shoveling whatever they could into their mouths as though it was their last meal. Maybe for some of them, it really was. And there he was.
