Chapter 001

I am fucking tired. If I have to serve one more sorry-ass, rude rich couple with their fake smiles and diamond-studded entitlement, I might as well just throw myself under the next delivery truck. My life is nothing but hell — working four jobs, unpaid bills, student loans, a sick mother, and a landlord who bangs on my door like I owe him my life instead of rent. Where the hell do these people find their money? How do they do it?I slumped against the counter, watching the couple in the booth sip their early-morning coffee like life owed them peace. She had a ring the size of my my entire life, and he had that bored, rich look the kind that said he’d never had to choose between food and electricity. They didn’t even look at each other. Just scrolled through their phones, sipping, existing. And still, they looked like they had it all.Meanwhile, my hands smelled like espresso and regret. The bell over the door jingled. And another stuck up family of three walked in. My shift wasn’t o

Chapter 002

The taxi dropped me two blocks from Club Verona. I didn’t want anyone to see me getting out in front. The bouncers had a habit of touching and talking, and in this city, gossip spread faster than disease. The moment I stepped onto the pavement, the air changed. The night smelled like extremely expensive perfume, cigarette smoke, and sweat. Neon lights from the sign above shimmered against puddles, turning everything pink and gold. Inside, the bass thumped so deep it rattled in my ribs. Laughter mixed with the metallic clink of glasses, and the place already pulsed with money, the kind of money people spent when they wanted to forget something, or maybe just the type they spent because they had more than enough. I smiled at Dani, the girl at the counter, then slipped into the back room, a would-be storage space that was turned into the girl’s dressing area, which was small and always crowded, mirrors lined with bulbs, air thick with hairspray and chatter, barely any space for leg move

Chapter 003

It had been two weeks since the absolute madness at Club Verona. Not a single word of it had made the news. No police sirens, no headlines, no hushed whispers on the morning talk shows. It was as if the man had never existed, as if a life hadn't been snuffed out under the neon lights, and the entire city had simply swallowed the secret whole and moved on. But I couldn't move on. That single scene played in my head over and over and over again, looping in my nightmares. How? How could a man walk into a packed club, put a gun to someone’s head, and execute them in cold blood while the world pretended nothing happened? The sheer, untouchable power of Adrian Holt terrified me down to my marrow. Yet, terror was a luxury I couldn't afford to dwell on. Reality had a vicious way of dragging me back. The kitchen table was littered with final notices. My phone buzzed against the formica top for the third time that morning—another automated call from the bank, demanding overdue payments on m

Chapter 004

The next morning, the gray light filtering through our apartment window felt less like a prison sentence and more like a spotlight. I woke up before my alarm, my heart hammering against my ribs, and lunged straight for my phone. Inbox (1). From: Clara Monroe Subject: Interview Invitation — Allegra Events I let out a breathless laugh, the kind that bubbled straight up from my toes. I was so excited I nearly woke Mom up, rushing across the hall in my bare feet to pound on Joan’s door. Joan answered looking like the walking dead, dragging a blanket around her shoulders. "Mara, it's six in the morning—" "I got the interview!" I squealed, grabbing her hands and spinning her around. "I need your help. I need to look professional. Like I belong in a high-rise office building on the east side of the city." There was a pause. Then, a sharp gasp. “You’re kidding!” “I’m not! They sent an email this morning inviting me in, the address and time, the whole thing.” “Are you sure you want to

Chapter 005

Handsome didn’t quite cut it. He was stunning, the kind of man who made people stop mid-sentence without even realizing it. His hair was jet black, cut sharp at the sides, falling just enough over his forehead to make him look recklessly elegant. He stood at least six-foot-five, broad-shouldered with the kind of posture that came naturally to men who owned rooms without saying a word. His face was all clean lines and high cheekbones, his jaw defined, his mouth firm. But it was his eyes that did it—steel-grey, cold and deliberate, scanning the crowd like he was already two steps ahead of everyone there. A few women near the carpet giggled, trying to catch his attention. He didn’t glance at a single one of them. I swallowed, my stomach tightening for a reason I couldn’t quite explain. He looked like he could destroy someone’s life with a single decision and never lose sleep over it. And even though something about him pulled at me, I knew immediately, he wasn’t the kind of man I sh

Chapter 006

This is going way worse than I thought. Who knew that lying, and keeping up with the lie would be this difficult? “Grace, Taylor, Amber, meet Elizabeth. She’s new in town and she’s Clara’s niece,” Elsie chirped as she pulled me into a circle. Three perfectly styled heads turned toward me, two blondes and a redhead, each one looking like they stepped out of a luxury perfume ad. Great. Just great. “I never knew Clara had family who visited often,” one of the blondes said with a sharp little snort. Amber. Definitely Amber. She looked at me like she’d already decided I didn’t belong here. “Yes!” I forced out a laugh. “I’m just here for a few weeks, then I’ll be on my way. It took a lot of convincing for Clara to let me stay, though.” God, could I sound any more fake? “If you are her niece you shouldn’t have to be on the same uniform as the other girls.” Amber pointed out. Obviously. I mentally rolled my eyes at the girl that is most likely not going to be as welcoming as E

Chapter 007

Grinding from ear to ear as I walked towards where everybody was gathered, Clara stood in the center, addressing us for a job well done and handing out out our paychecks, the event had finally come to an end without any of my lies blowing up in my face, which I will count as a huge win. “Mara, you did great, I’d love to keep you permanently as my staff if you are ready accept the offer” Clara, called beaming at me. “What?” I asked, coming out of my thoughts. “ Don’t I have to apply or something of that sort?” “You do, but since you proved yourself efficient today, I’ve deceived to offer you the job, that’s if you want it.” Clara explained. “Oh my god! Yes! Yes of course, I’d love to work with you.” I shouted excitedly. What was that saying about things handed to you on a platter of gold. This will not only give me the opportunity to get close to her but also I will have a well paying job and it can be believable that she’s actually my aunt. “Great. I’ll have Stella draw up a co

Chapter 008

The club was half-full, the usual Sunday crowd men with tired yet excited faces, women in tight dresses, coming in for their weekend hangout. Who even drinks alcohol this early hours of the day, it’s not even up to 5pm yet, the music just loud enough to keep people awake and raise their voice ten times higher than normal.Joan and I were behind the counter, wiping down glasses while the bartender flirted with two regulars. Joan looked as exhausted as I felt, her hair pulled into the same messy bun she’d been using since nursing school ended. My phone buzzed.Once.Twice.Then again.I frowned, pulling it from my pocket.Three new emails.I clicked the first one, and my heart almost stopped. From: Allegra EventsSubject: Employment Contract – Mara Collin’sMy eyes widened. “Joan,” I breathed. She turned. “What? Who died?”“I—” I shoved the screen at her. “I got the job. Clara actually sent the contract.”Joan blinked. Then squinted. Then blinked again.“Wait. Wait. Allegra Events? As i

Chapter 009

By eight, I was already in front of Clara’s office building, Allegra Group, sweaty palms, thrift-store blouse, and all.Stella, the assistant with the sharp bob and sharper attitude, escorted me into a glass-walled conference room. A few staff members were already seated, murmuring over schedules and event plans.Clara walked in last, confident as always, clipboard under her arm, red lipstick perfectly in place. She stopped at the front, scanned the room, and smiled.“Well,” she began, “before we start, we have something important to do.” Her gaze found me. “We’d like to officially welcome Mara Collins to Allegra Group.”My heart flipped.Everyone clapped politely, some with genuine warmth, others with that corporate curiosity: who is she and why is she here?I stood awkwardly, offering a small wave. “Hi… um, thank you.”Clara nodded. “Mara showed excellent initiative, attention to detail, and calm under pressure at our last event. She’ll be joining us as an assistant coordinator.”A

Chapter 10

I typed my number into Elsie’s pristine, sapphire-blue phone with fingers that were still slightly trembling. Mara Collins, my mind whispered. But on the screen, under the name slot, I typed: Liz Monroe. I handed it back with a practiced, elegant smile that felt like it was held together by scotch tape. “There. Now you can stalk me properly.” Elsie giggled, clutching the phone to her chest like a prized possession. “Perfect! I’ll text you tonight. We are going to have so much fun, Liz. Seriously, when Amber said you looked sketchy, I told her she was just being a total brat. You’re literally so sweet.” My smile stiffened. Amber said I looked sketchy. "Oh, Amber," I forced a soft, airy laugh, swirling the foam in my latte. "Some people just aren't used to seeing new faces, I suppose." "Exactly! Ignore her," Elsie said, taking a sip of her drink. "Anyway, I have to run to a fitting for yet another gala at the end of the month, but I am so glad I caught you. See you soon, Liz
