Chapter 1

I smelled the strong scent of jasmine flowers as soon as I woke up in the hospital bed.I opened my eyes and saw Dario Ajello, my fiance, changing out the water in the vase sitting by the windowsill."Lena, your body can't hold on much longer. You need to go through with the transplant as quickly as possible," Dario said, helping me sit up against the pillows as he patiently fed me some water.I pushed his hand away and said determinedly, "I've already told you. I don't want Lucia's kidney!"Dario smashed the glass onto the ground and yelled at me with red eyes, "Elena Rossi! Stop being so difficult! Lucia is the only person whose kidney matches with your blood type. You will die if you refuse to receive her kidney!""I would rather die than accept her kidney," I said, reiterating every word clearly as I watched him lose his cool.Dario quickly regained his composure and apologized, "I'm sorry. I was just too worried about you. I just didn't want to think that you'd leave me… It'

Chapter 2

I had always been the invisible one in my family. Yet, Lucia had always been both Dad's and my stepmother's little princess growing up.Even though I'd made my presence at home as tiny as possible, Lucia still disliked me and did all that she could to take everything away from me.She took Dad from me. She took my room from me. She even took away the dresses and jewelry Mom had left for me after she passed. The only thing she couldn't take away from me was Dario. For the past 15 years, Dario had always stood by my side, ignoring Lucia and all of her attempts to grab his attention.Dario was the person whom I loved. He was also the first and only person Lucia had ever fallen in love with.I knew Lucia too well. She would never agree to donate her kidney to me. She would only continuously postpone the transplant until the day I finally died. Her goal was only to snatch Dario away from me anyway. My face had gone so pale that Dr. Romano got concerned and asked, "Do you want to go

Chapter 3

It had only been three days since Dario left, and my heart had already stopped beating twice. Each time, the doctors managed to pull me back to life.Dr. Romano was frantic. "Ms. Rossi, your renal tubules have completely failed. If this persists, you'll lose your life before you know it. I really highly recommend that you restart your medication again."I shook my head and took two more painkillers."I'm fine. Please just keep my situation a secret from the others. I don't want Dario to find out."Just as I was done speaking, my phone suddenly buzzed with a notification. It was a text message from Lucia."Look, my dear Ellie. Guess who I'm with right now?"She'd also sent at least a dozen photos of her and Dario being close and intimate on vacation. The photos showed them riding on the gondola, taking pottery classes, hugging on the streets, looking at each other lovingly while under the willow trees…Every photo was in 4K resolution, and I could clearly see the tender, loving e

Chapter 4

After continuing the resuscitation efforts for 30 minutes, Dr. Romano finally stopped the chest compressions regretfully as he checked for my vital signs."Her pupils are dilated, her breathing has stopped, and her heart is not beating anymore. Unfortunately, resuscitation efforts have failed."He then glanced at his watch and told the nurse to record the time of my death. Then, he sighed heavily and tried calling Dario again. However, Dario's phone had been turned off, and there was no way for the hospital to get ahold of him.He tried thinking of calling someone else, but I didn't put down anyone else as my emergency contact besides Dario. With nothing left that the hospital could do, Dr. Romano told the nurses to keep my body in the morgue and wait for Dario to come back and deal with it.…At the same time, Dario was holding Lucia in his arms, gently caressing her back as they lay in a seaside bungalow in the Cecilio Islands.Today was supposed to be the day of the kidney t

Chapter 5

Lucia's requests were getting overboard. Dario wanted to reject it at first, but Lucia was very stubborn about it."What kind of boyfriend would behave like this, still contacting another woman while being with his girlfriend? Have you ever respected me properly?"In the end, Lucia teared up and sobbed."I've been single for 23 years, and I've also never experienced true love. I just want to experience what it would be like to be in a relationship with someone. I just want someone loyal who will treat me like their everything. Can't you do that for me?"In the end, Dario relented and agreed to Lucia's wishes. He took out his phone to text me and only realized then that his phone had been turned off. Still, he didn't think much about it. After turning his phone back on again, he sent me a text message."Lena, something came up at work, and I can't come back till much later. Just be good and listen to the doctor's orders about your treatment, okay? I'll come back very soon with you

Chapter 6

Dario immediately rejected Lucia's offer without hesitation, "It's fine. You can sleep on your own. Our one-month agreement is up. I'm not your boyfriend anymore now."Lucia's face turned dark for a split second. She quickly lowered her head to hide the dissatisfaction in her eyes."Alright, then. I'll try my best to fall asleep. You can sleep on the couch over there. It's big enough to be used as a bed."Dario agreed and went over to the couch, yawning deeply. Soon, he was fast asleep.Lucia then cautiously got up, changed into some sexy lingerie, and lay down next to Dario. Then, she carefully unbuttoned Dario's shirt and caressed his chest.Dario was still fast asleep when he suddenly felt a warmth pressed up against his chest. He awakened at once.He saw that his shirt had been removed at some point in his sleep. Lucia was also currently sprawled out on his body, kissing his throat. Shocked, he immediately shoved Lucia aside."What are you doing?"Lucia was caught off guard

Chapter 7

After Dr. Romano repeated his question a few more times, Dario finally snapped back to the present. He looked as though he had just lost part of his soul."How is that possible… How?"His voice was hoarse. His lips wouldn't stop trembling either. "Elena was still doing fine when I left! How could she die? She could have lived for another year! It has only been a few weeks since!"He grabbed Dr. Romano's arm, his eyes looking dazed. "It must be Elena, right? She asked you to play a joke on me, didn't she? It's my punishment for not coming back with her kidney on the agreed date, isn't it? "Please, please stop lying to me. I've brought the kidney donor with me today. We can proceed with the transplant immediately! Please!"Dr. Romano pried Dario's hand off with much difficulty. The look of anger in his eyes eventually turned into one of pity."Please calm down, Don Ajello. Ms. Elena Rossi has indeed passed on. All the other nurses and doctors in the operating theater witnessed her

Chapter 8

There was the sound of a loud slap.Lucia had reached out to Dario, but he immediately smacked her hand away mercilessly. He turned around and glared angrily at Lucia with dark eyes. "Lucia, you did this on purpose. You kept dragging this out so you wouldn't have to donate your kidney to Elena. Is that right?"Lucia was shocked. She quickly denied it and said, "No, I didn't!""You said you wanted to experience what it was like being in a relationship, but it was just your way of pushing the transplant to a later date. The low blood sugar and the high fever were also on purpose! You did that so you could keep putting off the transplant!"Even today, if nothing had happened to Elena, you would still have found a way to push it off, wouldn't you? Am I wrong?"Lucia's face gradually paled. However, she knew she couldn't admit to anything."Dario, we've been glued by the hips for the past few weeks! I only knew as much as you did! I also only just found out about Elena's death at the

Chapter 9

As soon as the words were out of Dad's mouth, he immediately realized that he'd just said the wrong thing. He quickly added, "What I meant is, you're rich enough to get any other kidney donor you want. You don't have to use Lucia's. You can't possibly think of sacrificing Lucia's health for Elena, can you?"Dario looked at Dad in utter disbelief. "Are you sure that Elena is your daughter?"He simply couldn't imagine how life must have been for me back when I was still living with them. He didn't even want to explain to them anymore that I had a very rare blood type and therefore it was close to impossible to find a match for my kidney. He also didn't want to bring up how much he'd sacrificed just to fulfill Lucia's wishes. However, something even more unimaginable was yet to come.Dad just glanced at the entrance to the morgue, not even meaning to look at me for the very last time. He just wiped his eyes and said to Dario, "Since Elena is now dead, we'll just bury her and let h

Chapter 10

After what felt like a long time—after Dario's hair and eyelashes had frosted up—one of his bodyguards came up to him.He said, "Don Ajello, we have already removed a kidney from Ms. Rossi's body. The hospital is now holding on to it. Is there anything else you would like us to do to her?"Dario had been sitting there for a long time without moving, like he was another marble sculpture himself. When he finally shifted, there was a loud clatter, and something fell to the ground.Dario turned to look and saw my phone lying on the ground, the screen completely cracked in places. His eyes finally lit up slightly. He quickly bent down to pick it up and cradled it in his arms."Lena…"His eyes filled with tears. He forced his tears back in as he connected my phone to the charger and turned my phone on.The first thing he saw was all the provocative messages from Lucia, coupled with plenty of photos and their mocking, disdainful captions.Dario's face turned black immediately. He jum
