Chapter One Hundred and One Irina Breakfast was torture. I sat at the long wooden table with my baby in my arms. My hands were shaking as I tried to eat the porridge they served. It tasted like ash in my mouth. Andrei was sitting across from me. He was watching me with those kind brown eyes that now made my skin crawl. How had I not seen it before? How had I not noticed the predator hiding behind that gentle smile? "Irina," Andrei said softly. "Are you okay? You look pale." I forced a smile. "I am fine. Just tired." "New mothers are always tired," Vera said from the head of the table. She was watching me too. "It is normal." Her voice was calm but I knew better. "Eat," Vera commanded. "You need your strength." I picked up my spoon with trembling fingers an

Chapter One Hundred and Three Irina They dragged me down the corridor like I weighed nothing. My feet scraped against the cold floor. I tried to fight but their grip was too strong. "Please!" I begged. My voice was hoarse from screaming. "Please do not do this! I have a baby! He needs me!" The creatures said nothing. They just kept moving forward, dragging me closer to that horrible room. Vera's heels clicked behind us. Each sound made my heart beat faster with terror. "You should have kept your mouth shut," Vera said. Her voice was so calm it made my skin crawl. "But no, you had to snoop around." "Please," I sobbed. Tears were streaming down my face. "I will not tell anyone. I promise. Just let me go. Please!" "Too late for that," Vera replied coldly. The

Chapter One Hundred and Five Irina I froze. My hand was still raised in the air.  My palm was stinging from the impact. I’d slapped Dmitri. Why had I slapped him? I really did not know. Behind me, I heard the paramedics gasp. Mikhail's men shifted uncomfortably. Everyone was staring at us. Dimitri stood completely still. His head was turned to the side from the force of my slap. His cheek was red. I waited for him to explode. But he didn't. Instead, he turned his face back to me slowly. And I saw tears in his eyes. Streaming down his blood-stained face. "I am sorry," he whispered. "I am so sorry, Irina." He pulled me into his arms, hugging me so tightly I could barely breathe.

Chapter One Hundred and Seven  Irina's POV  Something was wrong. I could feel it the moment Dimitri walked through the door. His face was pale, drained of all color like someone had pulled the life right out of him. His eyes were distant, and unfocused. Like he had seen a ghost. "Dimitri?" I called out from the top of the stairs, my voice catching in my throat. "Are you okay?" He did not answer. He just walked straight to his study. His footsteps were slow and heavy. I hurried down the stairs to meet him, my hand sliding along the banister to steady myself. "Dimitri, what happened? Is Alexei...?" "I do not want to talk right now," he said without looking at me. His voice was flat, completely devoid of emotion. "But…" "Please, Irina," he interrupted, his jaw cl

Chapter One Hundred and NineIrina"What?!" I stared at Dimitri like he had just told me the world was ending."He is faking it," Dimitri said. "Alexei never lost his memory. It was all an act.""How... how do you know?" I whispered."I heard him," Dimitri started pacing again, his movements jerky and agitated. "On the phone. He was talking to someone. Saying the plan was in motion. That I had bought the amnesia act completely.""What plan?" I asked, even though I was terrified of the answer."He said..." Dimitri's voice broke. He stopped pacing and looked at me. His eyes were filled with such pain it made my chest ache. "He said when he gets out of the hospital, he is going to take his son and the baby's mother."The room spun. I gripped the edge of the couch so I would not fall.Dimitri's jaw clenched. He looked like he was about to be sick. And I knew there was more. Maybe even worse."Dimitri?" I pressed. "Tell me. What did Alexei say?""He made a proposal," Dimitri said quietly.
