“How could you leave Sage? You just left, without a word. Why?” He didn’t wait for me to get to the foot of the stairs before he asked. I had rushed down, haven had his shouts coming from downstairs in my room. I knew Kaid was around. The moment I stepped out, his voice boomed in the living room. He was with Richard, and they were having an argument. I had been in my room all day. So, I asked my mum to let me move in for a few days before I could find a place of my own. She had agreed readily and came with Richard when I told them I needed their help moving, without having any back and forth with Kaid’s guards. Richard and Mum had arrived with a few guards. Obviously, no match for Biggie and his partner as they were outnumbered. But they had tried to stop me anyway. A scuffle had ensued, and there had been injuries. Some of Richard’s men had been assigned to drive them to the hospital to have treatments, while the rest helped move my stuff. In no time, I was done and had moved out a

I don’t know how I managed to get home. Everything just happened like a blur. I couldn’t stop replaying Sage’s distraught look, the tears, and the silence between us. By the time I got back home, it was well past midnight. The house felt empty without her presence. I missed her already. There was always a feeling I got whenever I got home. The feeling that I was coming home to someone waiting for me. And she was always here, waiting… Now, the house felt unusually quiet without her presence. I took the stairs with heavy steps, a heavy heart, and pushed the bedroom door open. The room felt different, somehow. It was devoid of her presence; it felt… That was when I saw the frame lying on the bed. Vivian What was it with her and trying to move into this room? Because I shared it with Sage, she wanted it too. A low rumble sounded in my throat as I yanked off the covers forcefully. She opened her eyes with a start. “Have I not made myself clear?” I was pissed. She had no right to be h

“Sage,” “Sage, are you listening?” I shook my head slightly and blinked to snap out of my thoughts. My mother had been speaking to me, but I had zoned out again. My thoughts had been scattered. For one, I wanted to hold on to Kaid’s words. Just a few days to go for the report, but didn’t that make me selfish? I sighed. “I’m sorry mum. I lost you there,” I sighed, as my fingers traced the rim of my untouched coffee. “You’re going to break down at this rate, Sage. I can't sit and watch you do this to yourself.” She lamented. “Mum,” I looked at her, my voice breaking. “I’ll be fine. I just—” I just needed time. “It’s alright, dear. You can tell me.” She urged again. I withdrew my fingers from the coffee cup and looked down at my hands. Where do I even start? The kitchen was quiet as my mother waited patiently for me to speak. “Tell me, Sage… exactly how do you feel? Whichever way it comes to you. I will understand.” My throat tightened. I felt a sting behind my eyes. The tear

“Sorry, Sage. When your mother told me, I was caught up somewhere and was quite far. How are you feeling?” He came over to my bed and stood quietly. My Dad stood up quietly and squeezed my hand. “I’ll be outside, princess.” He murmured, then kissed my head, then left, but not before giving Mum a longing gaze. She was lost. Her gaze was fixed on my Dad, and it occurred to me that she…No, they still had feelings for each other. But they were divorced now. Not to mention that she was now married to his once-upon-a-time best friend, whose company’s funds he embezzled, not to mention that he was responsible for the death of Richard’s wife. Now that I look at it, Vivian had really had her thorn deep into our lives even before we realized. If not for the current happenings around me, since the miscarriage, we wouldn’t have known. I wouldn’t have known that she was my half-sister, and Mum would have never known either. Could it be that Mum had suspected he was cheating, not knowing th

I placed my phone on silent and requested that I be discharged. Dad protested, but eventually I got my way. I could tell Mum was also worried, but they also knew I could be quite persistent when I wanted to be. The hospital reminded me of painful memories whose wounds were still fresh. It was better this way. I could rest better at home. “I’ll drive you,” Dad offered, supporting me as soon as Mum came back from settling the discharge process. “Thanks, Dad. But I should go with Mum and Richard. He’s been waiting outside all this time. Dad mumbled some mild words that made me laugh slightly. He always muttered to himself when he didn’t have his way. As soon as we stepped out of the hospital, he helped me get into mum’s car and waved us off. The ride was quiet and somewhat peaceful. I kept my focus on the streets, with their bright neon lights from streetlights, large electronic billboards, and high-rise buildings, until I dozed off. I didn’t know I even slept off until some loud
