Maya’s POV“What?”Tanya’s voice cut through the café, sharp enough that I flinched and nearly sloshed my coffee over the rim of the mug.“Tanya,” I hissed, leaning forward quickly, lowering my voice. “Keep it down.”Heads turned anyway. A woman two tables away glanced over, curious. The barista paused mid-wipe, his eyes flicking toward us.Tanya didn’t look embarrassed in the slightest.“Sorry,” she said, not sounding sorry at all. Then, louder than necessary again, “Did you just say she ‘walked into your workplace’ like she owned the place?”I reached across the small round table and pressed my fingers against Tanya’s wrist, grounding myself as much as trying to restrain my friend.“Yes,” I murmured. “But please, don’t —-”“And started giving you orders?” Tanya continued, voice rising again. “Like you were one of the furniture?”I sighed, sinking back into my seat. The café smelled like roasted beans and sugar, warm and comforting, but my shoulders were tight, my spine became rigid.
