Two months after the cabin trip, Sage threw up for the third morning in a row.Jenny found her in the clinic bathroom looking miserable.“That’s it,” Jenny said. “You are taking a pregnancy test.”“I’m not pregnant, it is just stress.” Sage rinsed her mouth. “The council vote is next week. Detective Sarah is still circling. I’m allowed to be stressed.”“You are also allowed to be pregnant.” Jenny pulled a test from the supply closet. “Take it. Rule it out so we can look at other causes.”Sage wanted to argue but another wave of nausea hit her, she took the test into the bathroom.Three minutes later she stared at two pink lines.Positive.“No,” she whispered. “No, no, no.”Jenny knocked. “Everything okay?”Sage opened the door and showed her the test.“Oh my god,” Jenny said. “You are pregnant.”“This wasn’t supposed to happen. We were careful. We used protection.” Sage sat on the closed toilet lid. “This is the worst possible timing.”“There is never a good time for surprise babies.”
