I stared down at the scarred prep table, the blade resting idle against a pile of minced vegetables. “She looks so young,” I whispered, my thumb tracing the dull side of the blade. Beside me, she paused mid-stir. The heavy copper pot settled back onto the burner with a soft, resonant clink. She let out a soft, breathy laugh in half agreement and half playfulness. “She does,” she murmured. Then, leaning her hip lightly against the counter, she added, “Just like me, right?” I turned away from the vegetable to look at her. In the warm light of the line, with a stray lock of hair tucked behind her ear and a sly, playful grin softening her lips. A sudden, quiet laugh broke through the hum of the kitchen. “Can’t argue with that,” I admitted, smiling back. “You’ve got me there.” She let out a genuine, musical laugh and set her spoon aside.
