Elena Dinner was at seven like it always was when Vivian was home. Elena came downstairs and found the dining room already set, Mrs. Parker moving between the kitchen and the table with serving dishes. The smell of roasted chicken and herbs filled the house. Alexander sat at the head of the table reading something on his phone, still in his work clothes minus the jacket. Vivian was across from him in a cream-colored dress, her wine glass already half empty. “Elena.” Vivian smiled when she walked in. “Perfect timing. Sit.” Elena took her usual seat and Mrs. Parker immediately placed a plate in front of her. Chicken, roasted vegetables, some kind of grain Elena didn’t recognize. “Thank you,” Elena said.
