(Adelaide) The gardens lingered with her long after they left the flowerbeds behind. Even as the winding paths gradually narrowed and the scent of turned earth gave way once more to cool stone and mountain air, Adelaide found herself looking back over her shoulder every few steps. Gardeners still knelt amongst the beds, their hands disappearing into dark soil before re-emerging dusted with earth. Somewhere behind them she heard another burst of friendly disagreement, followed almost immediately by laughter that carried lightly between the trees. Strange, how the palace had slumbered for centuries beneath the mountain’s weight, its bones broken, its gardens surrendered to wildness. Yet nothing here reeked of defeat.
