NoahI push through the motel door with my shoulder because my hands are full. I scavenged two bulging canvas bags of canned food, powdered milk, a half-dozen jars of peanut butter, and a small pharmacy’s worth of medicine for the pups and something called electrolyte packets. I don’t know the first thing about children, but I do know those kids are still more human than wolf, and they need all the help they can get. I won’t be bringing them with me to The Towers, back to their father who will just abuse them, but I will make sure the Lycan I put in charge of watching them has everything they need. The bags hit the floor with a dull thud the moment I see her in the lobby. She’s sitting on the welcome desk, showered and dressed in one of my T-shirts and a pair of her leggings. My shirt is way too big, reaching down to the middle of her thigh, but it clings in all the right places where her skin is still damp from the shower she took. She smells like our soap, not the cheap motel soap

LyricI watch the sun rise through the dusty windows. The place reeks of damp and rot and ancient cigarettes. I stare up at the yellowing ceiling, waiting for the day to start properly. The children are still asleep. I can hear their soft, even breathing through the closed door separating our rooms, but Em is awake. She is in the hallway, humming softly to herself. She probably thinks she’s cleaning. The mattress sags under Noah’s weight, and getting off the bed is like swimming through fabric, but I manage to do it without waking him. He groans softly, his eyelids flutter, and then he goes back to sleep.Good.My eyes feel gritty and my throat is scratchy. I tiptoe across the creaky old floor and rummage in our packs for a bottle of water. It’s lukewarm and stale, but I drink it anyway. The supplies Noah found in the town is still in the lobby. The children will wake soon, and they’ll be hungry, but instead of going to the foyer to see if I can scrounge breakfast together, I ease th

LyricThe Omegas moved in like a tornado led by Weiland who put them to work in the motel. Within hours, the place hums like a well-oiled machine, a fully operational command centre, complete with radios and satellite phones. The two dead humans on the top floor weren’t the only bodies in the place. The Omegas found others. Some had been dead for years. Noah did a cursory inspection of all the bodies, even the mummified corpses they found in a basement.“I think our little Em was used to death,” Noah observed. “That’s why the smell of the corpses didn’t bother her.”I looked at my mate. I held my t-shirt over my nose in an attempt to block out the stench, but it was futile. “What?”“These are murder victims.”“Yes, I know. The wolves took the town years ago.”Noah raises his eyes to look at me, but he had his hands planted firmly on the table in the dining room. In front of him lay a long dead human. His skin shrunken and dark grey, jaw drooping open to reveal several cracked and miss

NoahThe Roman general comes walking down the trail. Tall and fierce, his helmet tucked under his arm. The air is heavy with the scent of fires, smoke, death, and blood. It’s a unique blend of smells I’ll never forget.Lyric looks up at the general barrelling down the path in our direction, she gasps, and tries to step away. He walks straight through us. “It’s a memory only,” I tell her, and tighten my hand around her wrist. “No one here can harm you.”“A human did this?”“Yes. The Romans weren’t the only ones who loved to rule with fear and death.”“Why are you showing me this?” She looks up at me, her big eyes open, sincere.“I don’t know. I haven’t thought about this for a while.”I tried not to think about it until the memory faded. “And as bad as this was… it was still nothing compared to Beauregard’s destruction,” I add, hoping that remembering him will pull me out of antiquity. But apparently I’m stuck here now, because nothing changes. The terrified screams of the slaves, th

LyricI wake up later than usual. Noah isn’t here, but I’m not alone. There’s an Omega in the rickety chair next to the door, reading a book.Ally. She was the one assigned to me at the pack house in the mountains. She looks up at me when I clear my throat and smiles. “You’re awake.”“Yes,” I agree in a muffled voice and run my hand through my tangled hair. “Are you here to babysit me?”“The Pri- King informed me that you are in need of female companionship, so he asked me to be here when you wake.”I frown and shake my head. “I was just joking.”Her smile is sweet and genuine. “Sure, but he’s not wrong. She-wolves, especially Lycans, do need the company of our she-wolves. A friend, if you will.”And she’s going to be my friend? The Omegas I knew always sought more power and influence through me.But again, I have to remind myself, these are Lycans. The Omegas don’t revolt because they’re being mistreated, and the stronger ones, at least from what I can tell, don’t wield their power o
