The air reeked of iron and smoke. The sound of the wind howling through broken windows caused Aria's eyes to fly open. For a moment, she didn’t understand where she was. The room swam in darkness, the silk canopy torn and dripping red. Aria stood confused, her heart racing and fire burning through her lungs.Behind her, Maeron shouted.“Let her fall! Chapter 3–The hunter’s shadow.

Aria stumbled back as the beast lept at Elias.It slashed through the fire with its long claws, sending sparks flying through the air. Elias dodged the hit, blade falling.Aria’s heart started pounding, she grabbed a burning branch and swung wildly at the beast.It dodged the flame and snarled in fury.Then it turned to her.Her wolf fell within her, still and panicked.Her vision turned blurry.The beast struck hard—and she screamed.Silver light exploded from her palms, a burst of moonfire which threw the rogue backward into the trees.The forest blazed with silver light for a moment then went dark and quiet again.Elias stood frozen, eyes wide in fear and surprise all at the same time.He gasped at her.“What did you do—Aria…”She stared at her hands trembling.“I don’t know—it just happened.”Far away, Dax froze while walking.His eyes widened.Moonfire.He felt it miles away from them.A wave of energy swept through his blood, his wolf howled within him in response.He gritted his teeth

The cave smelled of wet earth and fear.Aria sat on the floor with her back against the cold wall, hugging her knees tightly to her chest in fear.Slowly, the night transformed into a pale gray dawn, she had no rest.How could she, with the burning mark on her skin.She felt his heartbeat right behind hers like an echo in the air.Every time she closed her eyes, she felt him. The woods grew darker ahead of them as they ran.Not because night had fallen—but because something wanted it that way.A strange feeling swept over Aria the moment they crossed the invisible boundary. The air thickened, heavier and creepier. Even the birds had gone mute, as if they feared being noticed.“This place is cursed,” Aria whispered.Dax didn’t stop running. His sharp eyes scanned the forest, every muscle tense and every step calculated.“It’s the Shadow Woods. The shadows moved as if they were living creatures.Aria froze as dark figures formed outside of the mist—tall, thin and bark—covered skin with glowing amber eyes.Their bodies were neither wolf nor human. They were something ancient. Carefully carved by time.“What are they?” Aria muttered.Dax didn’t answer immediately. He tightened his grip on his weapon until the blade groaned.Then he answered finally. “Forest keepers.”Elias let out a shaky breath. “ I thought those were just myths.”“I wish they were.” Dax muttered.The Keepers stopped moving several feet away from them. Their movements were undeniably smooth—like trees swaying without wind. Thick green moss dripped from their shoulders and long roots that didn’t hold them, curled around their ankles. The ruined fortress rose from the mountains like a wound that refused to heal.Its ancient black-stoned walls were cracked and scorched, carved with old claw marks and ancient symbols which were half erased by time. It was once the seat of the strongest Alpha bloodline in Volaria, but now it stood wrecked, abandoned and cursed.Aria stopped at the edge of the clearing to catch her breath.“This is where Kael was born,” she whispered.Dax held her hand tightly. He hadn’t let go since they entered the pass. “And where his father died.”Elias staggered up behind them, panting. “Everyone knows this place is a forbidden territory. The fortress shook.The stone groaned like something alive, ancient and enraged. The floor split with cracks glowing faintly with molten gold lights. The roar between the cracks increased—endless and powerful enough to shake dust from the ceiling.Aria clutched her stomach tightly.The child responded with recognition.Dax felt this the same moment she did. The sky burned.Arrows came falling like halestone, striking both stone and shield alike. The Alpha Guardian stood to its full height, its roar splitting the earth as it slammed its massive hands into the ground. Stone walls surged upwards in a tower, blocking the first batch of the council’s assault.Aria stood at the heart of the fortress, the Heartstone glowing in her hand.“Hold the line,” she commanded.Her voice, powerful and stronger than it had ever been.Every wolf heard her.
