I bite back a laugh, my nerves tingling with a mix of relief, excitement, and disbelief. It’s nice speaking to him , as I hang up . Nina bursts back in, ice cream in hand, her face glowing with triumph. “Here! Vanilla, just like you asked.” I reach for it, grateful for the small comfort, and for a moment, I’m happy.
