Nyra’s POVI woke inside gold. Not sunlight. Not the ordinary pale wash of dawn through branches. Gold. Soft and warm and alive around us, the cocoon Seraphina had wrapped around me and Ronan before sleep finally dragged us under. I lay there half-curled into him, my face tucked against the side of his chest, one of his arms heavy around my waist, the other bent beneath my head where he must have pulled me closer sometime in the night without waking. The grass beneath us had long since lost the sharp chill it carried when we first lay down. Or maybe the cocoon kept it out. The air inside the golden shelter felt warmer than the dawn outside, touched by that same impossible living light Seraphina carried, as if we had not slept in a meadow near a thinning barrier at all but inside the hold of some ancient protective spell that had decided, for one night, to be kind to us.For one brief, stupid moment, I forgot the world.
