Sapphire’s POVThe heavy doors of the library closed with a quiet, solid click as Alessandro left the room, giving me space to breathe.I sat motionless in the leather armchair, my fingers still pressed against the cool edge of the black folder resting in my lap. The rain continued to drum a steady, relentless rhythm against the tall bay windows, but the storm outside was nothing compared to the quiet collapse happening inside my head.I looked down at the photograph Alessandro had pulled from the vault. The man in the picture was tall, with sharp features, broad shoulders, and eyes that were undeniable. His hazel eyes looked exactly like mine. Beside him was a young woman with dark gentle eyes.*Johnathan Giovanni.* My real father and my mother, Lilian.I traced the edge of the faded paper with the tip of my thumb, my breath hitching in my chest. For twenty-one years, I had lived under the heavy, suffocating weight of being Astor’s unwanted bastard. I had spent my entire life believi

Sapphire’s POV The morning light hit my room, it was pale and sharp. I didn't reach for the oversized sweater today and I didn't want the soft house clothes either. Instead, I pulled open the wardrobe and grabbed the black silk dress sitting in the back. It fit like a glove, hugging my collarbones and falling neat over my knees. I brushed my hair, checked my reflection, and slid my father’s picture into my coat pocket. No more hiding in the halls. When I walked downstairs, the workers along the corridor straightened up. I could sense their curious gaze, but I didn't spare them a glance or look down. I walked straight past the grand staircase and stopped right outside Alessandro’s study. I knocked twice. “Enter,” Alessandro’s voice boomed from inside. I turned the brass handle and stepped in. Alessandro was sitting behind his massive desk. The desk was filled with papers and half-empty glasses of scotch. Matteo was standing by the fireplace, holding a thick file. Both

Sapphire’s POV The front doors swung open with a long, slow groan. Cold air and the smell of wet pavement rushed into the warm foyer. A tall man stepped across the threshold, shaking water from his charcoal umbrella before smoothing down his tailored suit jacket. Astor Giovanni. He looked older than he had looked the last time I saw him. His dark hair was messier, graying at the temples, and his eyes were bloodshot from a night spent in a police holding cell. But as he stepped into the foyer, he pulled his shoulders back, puffing his chest out. He took a deep breath, trying on that familiar, arrogant sneer I had watched him wear my entire life. He thought he was safe. He thought he had won. He reached out to hand his umbrella to a servant, expecting someone to jump to catch it. No one came. Astor frowned, tossing the dripping umbrella onto the polished marble floor with a quiet *clack*. He cleared his throat and looked toward the grand staircase, fully expecting to see Alessan

Sapphire’s POVThe iron gates of the Giovanni estate creaked loudly as our black car rolled up the long driveway.I looked out the tinted window at the sprawling stone mansion. I wore a sharply tailored burgundy dress that reached just below my knees, paired with a fitted black coat. My brown hair was styled in soft, elegant waves falling over my shoulders.I looked like a Giovanni heir.Alessandro sat beside me, adjusting his silver cufflinks. He didn't offer empty words of encouragement. He simply reached over, brushing his knuckles lightly against mine.“Ready?” he asked, his deep voice grounded and calm.“Ready,” I said, taking a slow, deep breath and letting it out.The driver opened the door, and Alessandro stepped out first, extending a hand to help me down onto the damp gravel. I placed my hand in his, holding my head high as we walked up the wide marble steps toward the grand entrance. The front doors were already open. Astor stood in the foyer, wearing an expensive velvet s

Alessandro’s POVSophia’s silk sleeves brushed my arm, her perfume was so strong it made the back of my throat itch.“He’s just taking her down to talk about the family business, Alessandro,” She purred. Then she stepped in front of me, blocking my view of the side corridor where Astor had just pulled Sapphire away.I didn't step back and I made sure to ignore her gaze. My eyes were fixed on the hallway where Sapphire’s shadow had just vanished into.Sophia rested a manicured hand against my chest, her fingers sliding slowly toward my lapel. When I finally got a glimpse of her stare, all I could see was the hunger in them. “You don't actually want *her*, do you?” she whispered. “Sapphire doesn't know how to stand beside a man like you. She’s frightened of her own shadow. But I know how this city works. I know how to hold a room at your side.”I took one slow, deliberate breath, letting the silence stretch between us until her fake smile began to strain at the edges. Then, I reached u
