Chapter 21

She leaned forward. "I'd like to see her, if I may. Perhaps a familiar face might help her adjustment."Nyxios considered the request. "I see no harm in a brief visit." He pulled a crystal bell from his desk drawer and rang it once. "Sometimes, seeing a less desired path makes the preferred one clear."A servant appeared at the door, and Nyxios instructed him to locate Zilska and Patrina in the west wing.Patrina knelt on the polished floor of the west wing corridor, a bucket of sudsy water beside her and a bristle brush clutched in her reddened hand. Dust streaked her face where she'd absently wiped sweat away, and the grey work dress hung limply on her frame, damp with splashed water and perspiration. Her hair, tucked hastily beneath the cloth cap, had begun to escape in wispy tendrils that clung to her neck. Six hours of scrubbing had left her back aching and her knees bruised, but worse than the physical discomfort was the humiliation of being reduced to menial labor, a deliberate

Chapter 22

Patrina's eyes snapped open in the darkness, her heart pounding with a sudden decision. She lay motionless in her bed, counting the heartbeats that marked time's passage as she waited for the house to fall silent. The opulent room, still hers despite days of servants’ labor, felt more like a taunt than a comfort. Moonlight spilled through parted curtains, casting silver paths across the floor that beckoned toward the door. She didn't need to see clearly to know that this might be her only chance. For five days she had scrubbed floors and polished silver while Nyxios watched with that infuriating patience. Tonight, she would prove him wrong. Tonight, she would escape. She slipped from beneath the silken covers, her feet touching the cool wooden floor. Her body ached from days of scrubbing floors and polishing furniture. Yet Nyxios continued to let her sleep in this chamber of luxury rather than relegating her to servants' quarters. The contradiction unsettled her. Was it kindness or mer

Chapter 23

Skotos Vex Maelis moved through the night forest with practiced silence, his tall form blending with the shadows. He'd slipped away from House Maelis’ guards an hour earlier, not that they could have kept pace with him anyway. The forest outside Limdrion's boundaries was technically neutral territory, neither dark elf nor high elf domain, making it the perfect meeting place for a scandalous romance.Moonlight filtered through the canopy, painting silver patterns on the moss-covered ground. The air here was different than in Limdrion. It was fresher, without the perpetual dampness of the city's canals. Skotos inhaled deeply, letting the scent of pine and night-blooming jasmine fill his lungs. Ahead, through a gap in the trees, he caught the faint glow of enchanted light.A perfect circle of soft grass surrounded by sentinel pines was ahead. Butterflies fluttered between pale flowers. At the center stood Wynth Besander, her back to him as she arranged something on a small cloth spread a

Chapter 24

The Autumn Elm tavern sat nestled among the massive trees of the Greenways, its structure seeming to grow from the living wood rather than being built upon it. Inside, lanterns of amber glass cast a warm glow over clientele who were mostly wood elves, with a scattering of travelers from other lands. In a corner booth, partially hidden by a gnarled wooden pillar, Felag Stonedelve slumped over his third mug of elven mead, his once-neat beard now stained with amber droplets. His eyes bloodshot from a combination of alcohol and lingering anger that had followed him all the way from Limdrion. "All those silvers down the gutter. All gone because of one human woman. What I don't understand is how she managed to slip away. One moment she's secured in my wagon, drugged with sleeping tincture, the next she's vanished like morning mist. In a city of dark elves! How does a human woman hide in Limdrion?"The three dwarves sharing his table exchanged uncomfortable glances. They'd been listening to

Chapter 25

Eliad Tin'vine strode away from the Autumn Elm, his mind churning with implications darker than the gathering evening shadows. A human scholar. In dark elf territory. Possibly captive, possibly worse. The dwarves' cavalier attitude toward her fate was despicable but unsurprising. The stone-hearted merchant was an obvious opportunist. Now this human scholar was lost in Limdrion, among the dark elves with their obsessive need to possess and dominate. Eliad shuddered, imagining what treatment she might be enduring. Dark elves and their "companions". It was a prettied-up word for something that made his skin crawl. The practice of human adoption was technically legal under the ancient treaties between elven realms, provided that the humans entered into the arrangement willingly. But "willingness" was a malleable concept in Limdrion, where charm magic and psychological manipulation were considered legitimate courtship tools. He had seen it once, nearly three centuries ago, during a rare di

Chapter 26

Nyxios found Skotos leaning against the railing of the western boardwalk, his dark face staring into the water below with uncharacteristic solemnity. The usual spark of mischief was absent from his friend's eyes, replaced by something distant and troubled. He had canceled their weekly webstrike match without explanation, a rarity in their decades-long friendship. Something was clearly wrong, and Nyxios was determined to discover what shadow had fallen across his friend's typically carefree spirit."You know," Nyxios said, settling beside him at the railing, "some might consider it rude to abandon our standing engagement without so much as a messenger." He kept his tone light, though concern threaded through his words. "I had my webstrike attire laid out and everything."Skotos's lips quirked in a half-smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Forgive me. I find myself distracted today.""Distracted enough to miss the chance to trounce me thoroughly?" Nyxios nudged his friend's shoulder. "Now

Chapter 27

The banging on Nyxios's bedchamber door interrupted his afternoon nap. He opened one eye, the purple iris adjusting instantly to the dimness of his curtained room. Ziska's frantic voice carried through the wood even before he could respond, her bangles jingling with her agitated movements as she pushed the door open without waiting for permission."Master Nyxios! The human—she's gone!" Ziska's scaled hands fluttered in distress, her amber eyes wide with panic. "I went to bring her evening meal and the room was empty. The window was open, and she'd tied the sheets together to climb down. I've already sent servants to search the grounds, but—"Nyxios stretched languidly, a smile playing at the corners of his mouth. He'd been expecting this. The bonds and the collar had begun to affect Patrina. He'd seen the subtle changes in her eyes, the way her breath caught when he entered a room. She was fighting it, of course. Her escape attempt wasn't a failure of his methods but rather confirmati

Chapter 28

Patrina stumbled through the forest, her lungs burning with each ragged breath. The torch in her hand cast wild, dancing shadows across the ancient trees, but did little to illuminate the path ahead. She'd been running for hours. The sack bounced against her back, containing the few provisions she'd managed to steal: bread, dried meat, a water skin, and a crude map drawn from memory. The ground beneath her feet grew softer, wetter. The dense forest thinned, revealing an expanse of marshland stretching into darkness. Patrina paused at the boundary, holding her torch higher. Mist curled around stunted trees and glimmering pools. Bioluminescent insects or perhaps something more magical, winked in the distance like false stars."This has to be the marsh the dwarves went through before Limdrion," she murmured to herself, recalling descriptions from the geography texts she'd studied. The collar at her throat seemed to tighten, a phantom sensation that made her fingers rise to touch the smoo

Chapter 29

From the shadows of a dilapidated boardwalk, Bartlos Slat watched the two dark elves exit the eastern gate of Limdrion, their lithe forms moving with supernatural grace through the twilight. He'd been following various Keltos servants for days, knowing they would eventually lead him to something useful for his master. Tonight, his patience had paid off."Keltos and his pet archivist," Bartlos muttered, recognizing the distinctive purple hair of Nyxios and the former guard's uniform on Thalana. "Where are you off to in such a hurry?"He attempted to follow them but his shorter legs were no match for the dark elves' swift pace. By the time he reached the forest's edge, they had vanished into the darkness. Bartlos cursed under his breath."Think, Bartlos," he admonished himself. "They left in haste, equipped for hunting."A suspicion formed in his mind: could this be linked to the human woman Mavros had been searching for these past weeks. Had Nyxios found her? Was he pursuing her now? A

Chapter 30

Zilska's scaled hands moved with surprising gentleness as she cleaned the marsh muck from Patrina's exhausted body. The bath water had turned a murky green-brown from the filth, yet the scalekin servant showed no disgust as she worked, humming a tune that seemed to float on the steam rising from the copper tub."You gave Master quite a fright," Zilska said, her amber eyes glinting in the lamplight. "Never seen him move so fast when he heard you'd gone. Nearly tore the door off its hinges."Patrina flinched as Ziska's claws gently scraped her scalp. "I didn't ask him to chase me."Ziska chuckled, her voice raspy. "No, but you called his name. He heard you in the darkness. He always will." She poured warm water over Patrina's head, rinsing away suds. "The bond between you grows stronger, whether you wish it or not."Patrina didn't respond. She sat numbly in the warm water, her mind still replaying the terror of the marsh—the plant that had tried to consume her, the massive lizard circli
