CHAPTER ELEVEN

I didn’t sleep. I lay tangled in my sheets, the phantom heat of Drake's hand on my skin playing on a loop behind my eyelids. Every time I closed them, I saw his eyes but in the dark of my mind, I forced them to turn a different shade, wishing with a desperate ache that they were Jake's. I desperately wished it was Drake standing by the door, and Jake was the one pinning me into the bed earlier. My hands wandered, sliding over my own skin as I tossed and turned, the quiet night magnifying every frantic beat of my heart. Every time I drifted off, I felt the ghost of that kiss in the car, the way the air had turned electric and heavy, thick enough to swallow me whole, only to be jolted awake by the muffled sound of Jake’s laughter vibrating through the hallway. Then, the silence broke. It started as a low murmur, then sharpened into a rhythmic, guttural sound. My mother. She was moaning, her voice unburdened and loud, echoing from down the hall."Harde

CHAPTER TWELVE

"You are never going to be my father..." I declared so it would sink into him. His knuckles were white where they gripped the steering wheel, the car finally jerking to a halt. Outside, the road was a desert, just a long, shimmering ribbon of asphalt baking under the afternoon sun. He didn’t turn to look at me. He just sat there, staring fixedly through the windshield as if he’d forgotten how to breathe and was trying to relearn the rhythm."Don’t ever do that again," he warned."Why?" I snapped, the bitterness rising in my throat. "Because I shouldn’t kiss my dad?" I spat the word out, and it tasted like copper on my tongue. "Fine. Then I don’t want you as a father.""Stop throwing a tantrum, Yuna. You’re twenty years old."The condescension made my head throb. "You think this is a tantrum?""We’ll talk about this later," he said, dismissing me with a wave of his hand toward the window. "After your date with your boyfriend.""He’s not my boyfriend!""He will be." He drew the line wit

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

"It won't be bad, would it?"The words hung in the salt-thick air, suspended between us like a fragile glass ornament. I hadn’t planned to say them. The impulse had been a reflex, a desperate internal wall I was trying to build to keep the thoughts of Jake from flooding back in. Or worse... thoughts of Drake. If I could just anchor myself to Brendan, maybe I could stop the derailment before I lost my mind entirely. Brendan froze, his hand hovering halfway to his water glass. The surprise on his face was naked, followed quickly by a slow, blooming heat in his cheeks. "Yuna... I mean, wow. I was hoping this went well, but I didn't think..." "I mean it," I pushed, my voice gaining a frantic edge that I tried to mask as passion. I reached a

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

"That’s why you’re coming in late." "Does it matter? I’m not a kid, and I don't have a curfew." "When you live under my roof, you have whatever I decide you have," he said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. He stood up, the ice clinking sharply against the glass as he set it down. He walked toward me, each step heavy, until he was standing in the small circle of light by the door. His eyes dropped to my shoulders. His lip curled in a silent, mocking sneer. "Get that cheap polyester out of my house," he whispered, stepping into my personal space until I could smell the sharp tang of whiskey on his breath. Polyes

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

"Tell us all the juicy details and leave no stone unturned!" Sera, Stephanie, and Gina crowded around me the second our first lecture ended."You’ve been making waves since yesterday," Gina added, her eyes glued to her screen. "Even that majestic kiss was caught on camera." She scrolled through her feed, showing off a blurry but unmistakable shot of us at the pier."The next step is to get laid by Brendan!" Stephanie yelled, nearly causing half the lecture hall to turn our way."Hey, stop that! You’re embarrassing me," I said, feeling a genuine flush creep up my neck."What do you mean, embarrassing you? You need to get laid by Brendan, and it needs to happen as fast as possible," Sera teased. "But that aside, did he bring you to school today?""Well... yeah," I said, shrugging. They immediately started drum-rolling their fingers on the desk, squealing in unison."Oh my god, Brendan is such a romantic..."The girls' excitement was cut short as Drake closed in on our table. He didn't sa

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

"Drake, why are you making her carry your heavy bag?" he asked, his voice cold enough to stop Drake in his tracks. Jake stood there with the bag hanging effortlessly over his own shoulder. "Dad?" "Coach to you whenever I'm here," Jake corrected sharply. His scent surrounded me, making my knees feel like water. Drake flinched. "Coach." "Why did you make her carry this?" "I was..." "When are you going to learn to clean up after yourself?" Jake stepped toward Drake, his presence overwhelming. "This is why you never get better at biking, because all you do is delegate. You s

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

The words "get out" echoed across the dirt track, sharper than the whistle Jake had been blowing all afternoon. I stood frozen for a second, my lungs burning from the dust and the sheer disbelief. I wanted to scream back, to tell him he was a monster, but the look in Jake’s eyes was like a physical wall. He wasn't just my mother's husband right now; he was a stranger with ice in his veins. "Fine, I will!!!" I yelled back flippantly, turning my back on both of them. He could’ve said something without shouting at me, without looking at me with that freezing stare. I was only trying to care for my stepbrother; there was no need for him to be so harsh. Fuck you, Jake! Always thinking he could mess with my feelings whenever and however he wanted.

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

"Oh my God... they’re so in love with each other..." The whispers rippled through the cafeteria like a wave, accompanied by the constant, rhythmic clicking of phone cameras. "She’s so crazy about Brendan. Doesn't even mind kissing in the cafeteria now." "Who wouldn't be over Brendan? He’s literally the nation’s rising fashion model and star baseball player. They’re a match made in heaven." "And look at the way he loves her," another girl sighed. "See those eyes? Fixed on hers alone." Brendan’s hands smoothed my hair, his touch gentle and grounding. He didn't seem to hear the gossip or notice the cameras; he was in his own world. "I just like you so much, Aubrey," he whispered.

CHAPTER NINETEEN

"Uhm..." The word died in my throat the moment I felt the weight of their combined stare, especially hers. Ms. Illya looked at me with a calm, intellectual curiosity that made me feel like a bug under a microscope. "I... Uhm... I came to see Ms. Illya about her topic on gender inequality. From the lecture," I rambled. I could taste my own nerves, a bitter, metallic tang on my tongue. I kept my chin up, trying my absolute best to look anywhere but at Jake, though I could feel his eyes searching my face, digging for the real reason I’d burst in. "Gender inequality?" Ms. Illya echoed. She stood up, smoothing her skirt with a grace that felt like an insult. "Come over here, Aubrey." She

"Don’t start, Aubrey. Don’t do this. I need to take you home now, I have a meeting with important people later."Important people? I was sure even Illya was marked as "important" in his busy diary. I stared at him, my jaw set. I would rather die here than spend another twenty minutes trapped in the suffocating silence of his car. Than be under his gaze where he will have the glory of treating me like his daughter. "Brendan can drive me," I said, my voice cool and steady. "I’m actually staying behind to wait for him.""How do you expect me to leave you in the care of some boy? I’m supposed to be taking you home to...""I’m twenty, Jake. I can choose who I ride with," I countered, cutting him off before he could claim his "fatherly" rights again. I looked past his shoulder, focusing on the shadow in the backseat. "Drake, tell him. Tell him I’m going with Brendan."Drake didn’t even open his eyes. He looked drained, his spirit flattened by the day's brutality. "Just let her go, Dad," he
