“No Noah, I haven’t.” I replied quickly, as the words slipped out. We had talked about this earlier, and the memory of that conversation still hung between us like a smoke. “Baby, come on—” he started, but I turned to face him fully, cutting him off mid-sentence. “Stop, Noah. Seriously.” My voice rose just enough to surprise even me. “I really don’t get this persistence. I told you I was going to talk to him. I didn’t say today, I didn’t say tomorrow, but I will. Isn’t that all that matters?” He lifted both hands in surrender, his eyes wide with concern. “Okay, baby, calm down. I hear you. I didn’t mean it like that. I’m sorry if I upset you.” He stood up slowly and moved toward me, reaching for my hands, but I stepped back, with my arms crossed tightly over my chest.
