The darkness wasn't just an absence of light; it was a physical weight. We had been running for twenty minutes, stumbling through the rough-hewn escape tunnel that spiraled down into the roots of the mountain. The sounds of the battle above—the plasma blasts, the screaming of the inhibitor crystals, the roar of Malik defying gravity—had faded into a dull, rhythmic thumping that vibrated through the stone walls. Then, the thumping stopped.Silence rushed in to fill the void, heavy and suffocating."He stopped fighting," I whispered, bracing my hand against the damp wall to keep from falling. My chest was heaving, my lungs burning. "Malik stopped.""Maybe he escaped," Eliana gasped, her voice trembling in the pitch black. She was holding onto the back of my trench coat, using me as a guide. "Maybe he retreated to the upper levels.""No," I said, the image of Kazi’s ceramic knife flashing in my mind. "Malik wouldn't run. He bought us time. He paid for this head start with blood."A wave

The dust and psychic residue had not yet settled at the base of the Mount Meru waterfall when the heavy transport choppers arrived. The sound preceded them—a low, rhythmic thumping that seemed to vibrate through the very marrow of the mountainside. They weren't the standard-issue, beige-and-camo helicopters of the Tanzanian People's Defence Force. These were matte-black Chinooks, unmarked and shielded with radar-absorbent coating, flying low and fast through the jagged canyon. Their rotors chopped the humid evening air with a violent, aggressive thwup-thwup-thwup that silenced the local wildlife more effectively than Kazi’s shotgun blasts.Commander Kazi stood on the rocky, blood-stained bank of the Njiro River, watching them descend. His exoskeleton was still smoking, the hydraulic fluid leaking from a severed line in his thigh. The chest plate, once polished steel, was now a pitted, orange ruin where Malik’s entropic touch had accelerated a century’s worth of rust into a single seco

The weight of the mountain was not merely physical. It was the weight of a dying dream, heavy and cold as the basalt slabs that pinned Malik to the earth.Beneath the ruins of the Sanctuary’s Great Hall, the silence was absolute. The roar of the waterfall, which had been the heartbeat of the mutant colony for three years, was now a muffled, distant throb—the sound of blood pumping in a bruised ear. Malik lay in the dark, his body twisted at an angle that would have ended a human life. A three-ton pillar of volcanic rock rested across his legs, and his left arm was pinned beneath a pile of shattered crystal. But Malik was not human. He was the Apex. His lungs, reinforced by the Star-Code, drew in the thin, dust-clogged air. His heart, a rhythmic engine of quantum kinetics, beat with a slow, purposeful thrum.I failed them, he thought. The thought was a jagged shard of glass in his mind. He remembered the faces of the children he had taught just yesterday—the boy who could speak to bird

The creature that stepped out of the yellow, sulfurous fog was a monument to genetic agony. If the blind, scrambling Rejects that had just fled were the scavengers of this subterranean ecosystem, the behemoth now standing before Baraka was its undisputed king. It stood easily eight feet tall, its proportions a horrifying mockery of the human form. Its left leg was massive, swollen with dense, tumorous muscle tissue that dragged slightly with each step, while its right side was lean and corded like twisted steel cables. But it was the face and the light that froze the blood in Baraka’s veins.Unlike the blind scavengers, this Alpha had eyes. They were sunken deep into a skull that had warped and broadened into something resembling a prehistoric ape, but the eyes themselves burned with a sickly, corrupted violet fire. It wasn't the pure, clean energy of the Starfall that Malik wielded, nor the bright sparks that knit Baraka’s flesh back together. This light was greasy, flickering errati

The hiss of the ventilation shafts sounded like a nest of disturbed vipers.Thick, heavy plumes of white vapor cascaded from the ceiling grates of the Command and Control room, pouring down the walls and rolling across the dusty floor like an avalanche of dry ice. The gas didn't smell like sulfur or the rot of the deep caverns. It smelled synthetic, overwhelmingly sweet—like crushed lotus flowers mixed with the sharp, metallic tang of ozone and rubbing alcohol."...our greatest success has finally come home," the pre-recorded video of a younger Professor Manji looped on the blood-red monitor, his digital voice perfectly calm against the blaring of the emergency sirens. "Welcome to Zenith, Patient Zero. We have been waiting for you.""Eliana!" Baraka shouted, pulling his ruined trench coat over his mouth and nose. "Stop the vents! Shut down the system!"Eliana was already at the console, her fingers flying across the ancient, mechanical keyboard with desperate speed. But her hands were
