Chapter 31

AVERY WINTERSStuck between Bernard's question and the worried thoughts swirling in my mind, I clenched my hand into a tight fist. I don't know what exactly is going on. I kept wondering how Caden got my contact, and what exactly was he after? I had thought meeting him at the mall was merely a coincidence, but now, it seemed like it wasn't. I looked at Bernard, forcing a calm smile. "It's nothing important. Just some random text," I lied, sliding my phone back into my bag. Right now, I desperately hope he would buy my lies, and relief washed over me as he seemed to buy it.He smiled softly, kissing me briefly on the cheek. "I will be in my study. Tell me when you're ready."I nodded, flashing him a warm smile. He ruffled Ivy's hair slightly, laughed at her playfully glared as she slapped his hand away, and walked away.As soon as Bernard was out of sight, Ivy pulled me closer, her expression stern. "What was that all about? Why are you acting all suspicious? What's going on?"I

Chapter 32

AVERY WINTERSI sauntered downstairs, the soft click of my heels on the marble floor announcing my presence. Bernard's gaze slowly snapped up from his phone, his eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my heart skipped a beat. His lips gently parted, and for a moment, time seemed to stood still as his gaze roamed over me, taking in the sight of my dress, the way it hugged my curves, and the delicate silver necklace glancing off my collarbone. I walked closer, my heels echoing in the silence, until I stood an inch from him. "Hi," I whispered, my voice barely audible. His eyes never left mine, his voice low and husky. "Hey," he muttered, his gaze burning with desire. The air was filled with tension as Bernard took in every detail of my appearance. "You look.... Absolutely beautiful, Avery," he complimented.I felt a flush rise to my cheeks as I met his gaze. "Thank you, husband," I murmured, my eyes locked on his. "You're not looking bad yourself," I added, checking out hi

Chapter 33

AVERY WINTERSI stared at him, my heart with fear. "Yes, Bernard. That's all he was to me. My ex, and my past. Please, don't listen to his words," I pleaded, my voice trembling with fear.I didn't know how things suddenly turned around between us, just a moment ago, we were both happy, things were perfectly fine between us. I was glad to be blessed with a man like him, but now, the man standing right in front of me seemed different. He was like s stranger. His expression twisted in anger and betrayal, his eyes were icy. "So, you're seeing your ex-husband behind my back now?" He growled, his voice low and menacing, sending shivers down my spine. I felt like my whole world has come crumbled, tears slowly welling up in my eyes. I wanted to rush to him, wrapped my arms around him and hug him tightly. Beg him to listen to me, but his rigid stance is holding me back.As I tried to moving closer, he abruptly stepped back, his expression deadly and I know I had to explain myself before th

Chapter 34

AVERY WINTERSA heavy sigh escaped my lips as I pulled out my phone from my purse and dialed Ivy's number."Girl, isn't it too early for you to call?" she teased, chuckling. "Is Bernard not there with you or what?" she added."He knows about everything," I muttered, worriedly. Her tone instantly turned serious. "What's that?"I took a deep breath. "Bernard, he thinks I'm cheating on him," I muttered, bitting my lower lip nervously."Okay, Avery, you need to calm down and tell me everything clearly. What do you mean Bernard believes you're cheating on him?" she asked softly, her voice laced with worry. I poured out the whole story to her, without leaving anything out."That bastard!" She hissed as soon as I was done speaking. "I knew he was up to no good. Are you okay?" she asked, her voice laced with concern. I wish I can reply to that, but I'm not okay at all. I've not been myself fir the past 30 minutes since all these had started. I just can't stand him being mad at me, especia

Chapter 35

AVERY WINTERS"Bernard, I know you're still upset with me, but I didn't do it. I would never cheat on you. I swear, I wouldn't," I said, shaking my head against his back. "Since the day I left his house, I hadn't see him until yesterday at the mall. I had no idea he was following me. I didn't even know he was going to be there." I hurriedly explained everything, leaving nothing out, before he changes his mind and leave again. I also told him how scared I was and how I wish I had been honest with him from the start. As soon as I finished speaking, he let out a low breath, his shoulders slumping weakly before he grabbed my hands, removing it from his waist and slowly turned to face me. "Avery..." he began, his gaze meeting mine. "Did you know why I was upset with you?" He asked, his voice low and gentle.I shook my head, unsure of what to say.He let out a soft sigh again, and then guided me back to the bed, and we sat together, his fingers caressing my palm. "I detest bring lied t

Chapter 36

AVERY WINTERSI had no idea what was going to happen after spending the two days holiday here, but whatever it is, I don't care about it. I just wanted to spend more time with my husband, and enjoy the moment."But, aren't you planning on leaving for somewhere? Where were you going?" I asked, searching his eyes for any sign of lie.He shook his head. "I just wanted to see the outside view since were still fast asleep, and I didn't want to disturb your beautiful sleep."Lies.His eyes were saying something else.I decided not to push further, it's better not to drag it out with him. Things were already okay between us now, and I didn't want to ruin it."So, what are we having for breakfast?" I asked, flashing him an innocent smile. I hadn't eaten anything last night before Caden showed up and ruined the moment. I ended up going to bed starving, and I didn't think I could wait any longer again. I'm seriously starving right now."Want to cook with me?" He asked. My brows furrowed in

Chapter 37

AVERY WINTERS"Avery, can we please go somewhere and talk about it? Somewhere silent. Just... you and I," he requested, his eyes pleadingly. For a moment, I stared at him and let out a scoff again. Like I would ever do that."We have nothing to talk about, Caden. It's over between us. I've moved on a very long time ago. You should too. There would be nothing like US ever again!" I spat, turning around to enter my car and just go away from here, but he caught my arm again."Avery, I know you're upset right now, but believe me when I say, I regretted not believing you. I was blinded and fed with lies.""Well, I don't care what you think now, and I don't care to know about whatever you just found out! I don't want to listen to it," I wanted to throw this words at his face, but thwy felt stuck in my throat. I couldn't say it to his face, and I hated myself more for staying this quiet. I just stood there, staring at him like a statue."Believe me, I hated myself for treating you the w

Chapter 38

AVERY WINTERSAs Bernard stormed toward Caden angrily, I knew I had to do something real quick. I anxiously stepped out of the car, rushing toward him, but unfortunately, my ankle twisted, and I landed instantly on the floor with a thud on my butt."Aarghh!!!" I yelped out in pain, biting my lower lip.Bernard turned, and as his gaze landed on me on the floor, his expression immediately transformed to worry. He rushed over to me, crouching down beside me with a straight, stern expression. He was good at doing this. Whenever he's upset, he would locked me out and it becomes difficult to read him again. But, from his expression, I knew I've really messed up this time around."Are you okay?" He asked.Even though he sounded worried, his expression kept saying something else.I had planned to fake being hurt, so Bernard could get worried and take me out of here. I never imagined the real pain would come from my own ankle, because right now, it really throbbed with agony.I just wanted

Chapter 39

AVERY WINTERSNEXT MORNING I opened my eyes, turned and reached for Bernard at the other side of the bed, but he was nowhere to be seen. I abruptly sat up straight, scanning the room, and calling out his name repeatedly, but got no response him. I thought worriedly— this only means one thing, he isn't in the room.I glanced up at the clock on the wall, and was shocked as the time shows 10:16 AM. I couldn't believe I had slept for that long. This has never happened to me.I glanced down to my body, and found myself wearing a black nightdress— Bernard's favorite color. I'm sure he had changed me into this while I was asleep.I slowly got out of the bed, and a sharp pain shot through my ankle, and I winced. I thought the pain would've subdued by now, though it got better to that of last night's pain.I limped out of the room, and headed downstairs. My ankle is still sensitive and I have to watch my step. Weirdly, I didn't see any maids around. Maybe he'd assigned them some work out

Chapter 40

AVERY WINTERSHe wasn't going to get angry— I thought, staring at his face, confusedly. I searched for his eyes, looking for answers, but he still had that unreadable expression on.I couldn't help but wondered— what was this man planning on doing this time around? Why won't he saying anything to me? I've been expecting him to be upset, and tejm talked about what happened yesterday's evening, but he was acting weird. This is unlike him. He wasn't the type to keep quiet, or hold back his words, else if there's something he's up to, and doesn't want me to know about."Well, you can't blame me," I said defensively. "If I had seen you in the room, I wouldn't have gone looking for you in the living room."Instead, he asked, his tone fi amd serious, leaving no room for argument. "Avery, is that clear?"I nodded, softly. "Yes," I answered. "Good," he said, smiling, and kissed me softly on the lips. "Give me a few minutes to talk to Harper. I will be right back. I would also ask Aubrey t
