KEALBy the time the water cooled, we had gone quiet, wrapped around each other as though sound itself might break something fragile between us. I stood first, stepping out of the tub and holding my hand out to her. When she rose, I wrapped a towel around her immediately, shielding her from the chill, drying her skin slowly, carefully. Every motion felt deliberate, reverent, as if rushing would diminish the moment.When I finished, I dried myself quickly, my focus never leaving her. Then, without a word, I lifted her into my arms.Her soft laugh caught me off guard, light and surprised, and her arms slid around my neck as naturally as if they had always belonged there.
