The Mask of the Luna CracksDaria's POVI was cowering in the beams over the council room, and gagging about some sick sneaking that had a way of making me invisible. I could feel my heart beating, quiet, yet calm, as I saw all the people below come up in a large circle. Torches cast dark shadows on faces which had before set their backs on me or looked down on me. They all appeared to be wobbly tonight.Lira was halfway, all white silk, and too fine. She was placing her hand over her belly again as though she was reminding everyone why she was even there. Her smile trembled, and she continued to look at the door as though she was frightened. She is scared, I just thought to myself, I guess she is.Lucius sat up on that high bench together with the elder ones. All stiff all round his shoulders, and his jaw all squashed down. He was skinnier, his skin was too pale, and his eyes had big shadows. But this time, there was a different thing about him--as though he were listening. Like he w

The Chase to the RiverDaria's POV All was blurred in the forest as I ran.Branches tore my cloak and my flesh, roots as hands smatched at me, but I made no slack. I could not take a breath without my lungs burning, could not take a step without soreness in my shoulder, and I was driven on more than ever by fear.Rylan was behind me.I could sense him, not only hear him chasing, but sense his agonised attention, as if it were a blade, against my back. He wasn’t yelling now. He didn’t have to. He was hunting.Ari! he cried, too near to think he was dreaming. “You can’t outrun me forever.”I didn’t answer. I turned my teeth and went on a run.The bushes grew denser, the ground more precipitous. Moonlight tore away the canopy, and the woods seemed to be a labyrinth of shadows and silver. My foot slipped on wet leaves, and I was about to fall, when I just grabbed onto a trunk.Mommy.I heard the voice of Harriet with fear.I know I said to myself as I heaved myself up. “I know, sweethea

Preparation for WarDaria’s POVI discovered that silence was not empty all the time. It was a disguised warning always. The woods that surrounded our hideout were such that, like, they were as still as the entire world. I put my palm to the stone wall of the ruined temple and mumbled the last words of the ward. The symbols faded away and went into the rock, as they always belonged there."That's the last one," I said.Harriet came a few steps behind me, and her little hands were up, and her face was fierce with concentration. She saw a glow of light before her as transparent as glass. Her teeth clenched together, her sweat glands beginning to run at the temples."Hold it," I encouraged softly. "Feel it, don't force it."I am feeling it, I am shaking, she said. "It feels... heavy."That is because it is strong, I said. Strong shields never seem to be light at the beginning. The shimmer steadied. Harriet drew a breath that she was holding back and dropped her hands slowly. The shield d

What the Wolf SeesDaria's POV Noise was absent again in the forest, but it was not that pleasant quiet of when you are simply relaxing. It was the spooky type that gave me the bumps, as though we were being followed around by something. Harriet was still clinging to me, and her little fingers fastened onto my cloak as though nothing could make them be released. I might tell her heart was beating right through the thin material, all jumpy and lopsided. "He's still here," she whispered. I get it. I know he’s there too. Lucius had stopped walking. He was not running as the other warriors were. Somewhere away beyond the magic queerness in me, he was, near enough that I could feel his presence creep up my skin. The air was thick, as though it were a cord which was going to be snapped. I rewrapped my cover and ensured that it remained tight. "Don't move," I whispered. "No matter what you feel." Harriet nodded, but was looking full in the face of the gap between the trees. It is

A Dangerous Kind of HopeDaria's POV When Harriet said those words, the temple appeared to be much smaller. Quiet and… heavy, I guess. I find myself still imagining Lucius on his knees in my head, although it is not as though I am not noticing him. I despise that in me which only reacts instantly and even takes care when he is torturing us. I rose and began to walk about, and my boots squeaked on the stone floor. Well, we must combat this, I said finally. Harriet gazed up at me in alarm. "Yeah, sure," she said. Her voice was little, but solid, as it was too solid to belong to a child. I ceased to pace and turned to her. "Harriet—" No, no, no, she said, wrapping herself up. "He scares me. I felt him before. His pain feels like claws. And when he gets mad, it burns." My chest tightened. I crouched in front of her. I would never expose you to danger. Never." He is dangerous, she said to herself. "Even if he doesn’t mean to be." I closed my eyes. She was right. Lucius
