Chapter 1

“Well? Has she apologized?” William swirled the wine in the glass with a cold look in his eyes. “I didn’t hear anything from the freezer.” The bodyguard shook his head. William’s movements stilled for a moment before he scoffed. “And she had the nerve to say she was scared! She didn’t even cry! It looks like Joy was telling the truth.”The bodyguard was taken aback. He stammered, “But Miss Violet has always been frail. Could she have fainted because of the low temperature?”“Fainted?” William chuckled. “She accidentally got into the freezer once when she was a kid, and she was perfectly fine, even though she stayed in there for two days. It’s been less than half an hour. How could she have possibly fainted? The freezer isn’t that cold.”He spoke in such a flighty manner that it was clear he did not take the bodyguard’s words seriously. But he had forgotten that when I was first shut in the freezer, it permanently damaged one of my legs, even though I had survived it.He had a

I had never thrown Joy into the freezer. On the contrary, she was the one who took me in there. Since she had framed me up far too many times, I was very cautious and had never intended to go to her birthday party. But before her party, she threw my mother’s favorite necklace into the freezer and threatened me. “If you don’t go in to get that, I’m going to destroy all of Mom’s clothes.”Because of my past experience, I was terrified of freezers. For the first time ever, I spoke to her meekly. “Please, couldn’t we do something else? I won’t bother you and William anymore.”She ignored my request. She smashed my mother’s memorial photo. With no other choice left, I endured my fear as I wheeled myself in. The moment the chill settled on my skin, my heart raced so fast that I could not even breathe. It was as if a hand was squeezing down on my throat, and those horrible memories rose in my mind. I searched with every ounce of energy that I could muster. In the end, I finally

William stood at the center of the dance floor as he held Joy by her waist and relished in everyone’s jealous gazes. Meanwhile, I could not even make a sound. The icy air that seeped out from under the gaps of the freezer door made the bodyguards tremble in the cold. They exchanged glances, and one of them asked, “Don’t you think that the freezer’s temperature is colder than usual?”Another said through chattering teeth, “Y-yeah. Why is it so cold? We’re already freezing. Miss Violet hasn’t even let out a peep. Do you think she’s okay in there?”The captain of the bodyguards felt uneasy. He ran to the banquet hall to talk to William. But Joy’s maid stood in his way. “Mr. Staton is enjoying himself. Don’t bother him, and just do as you are told.”The bodyguard captain wanted to say something, but the maid interrupted him again. “Don’t forget who’s going to be the lady of the house in the future. Even if something happens, Miss Joy can vouch for you.”He gave her one long look b

“No… How can this be?”William’s eyes widened in shock, and his chest heaved. The cold air almost made everyone freeze where they stood, but he ran over to me like a madman. My eyes were wide open, and my hand was reaching for the door. It was evident that I was in agony.“Violet… No!”He held my corpse like a madman and roared, “Stop standing there, and call the doctor!”The people exchanged glances but did not move. All of them knew that I was already dead. With bloodshot eyes, William punched one of the bodyguards who had been standing guard over the freezer. “What were you people doing?! Didn’t you hear anything from inside?”The bodyguard stammered, “Mr. Staton, w-we really didn’t hear anything from inside…”Just then, the butler ran over. He looked agitated. “Mr. Staton, someone turned the freezer’s temperature to –58 °F!”Those words made William freeze. –58 °F was far below what a human body could endure. He lowered his head and stared at my slightly parted mouth

As William sat on the sofa, his expression darkened. The living room floor was covered in glass shards. The servants knelt on them and trembled. They did not even dare to breathe too loudly. Joy was the final person to arrive. When he saw her, he said coldly, “Someone told me that your maid was the last person to approach the freezer.”The maid trembled and shot Joy a fearful glance. That one look made William scowl, but Joy hurriedly said, “After I got out, I found that I had lost something. My maid thought that I left it behind in the freezer. That’s why she went to check. She didn’t do anything.”The maid immediately nodded, but that only deepened his scowl. “She went to look for something? Why didn’t she go in, then? Why was she lingering around the control room for so long?”Joy froze. She had not expected the maid’s tracks to be exposed so thoroughly. At that moment, she made up her mind and slapped the maid. “What on earth did you do behind my back?”The maid stared

William returned to the study with his shoulders slumped. My corpse had been cleaned up and was lying in the study quietly. He caressed my face and whispered in a trembling voice, “I’m sorry.”Just then, the butler walked over with a note. “Mr. Staton, we found a note in the maid’s pocket. It contains a few words written in blood.”The contents were simple. [Joy threatened Miss Violet with her mother’s necklace. That’s why she went into the freezer.]William read it calmly. He showed no emotion. It seemed he had figured out the whole truth by then.He glanced at the box that was placed nearby. It contained my personal effects, and at the very top was an emerald necklace. He remembered that necklace. His father had given it to his mother as a token of his love. Apparently, it was the gift his father had given his mother when he proposed, and his mother treasured it dearly. One time, I had worn it in secret, and my mother had yelled at me.I had felt sad and had cried at the

I hovered by his side and watched as William cut into his flesh with a scalpel. Clearly, he wanted to die. In the past, I would have panicked and tried to stop him. But I could no longer do it. Besides, I felt calm. In my eyes, William had died a long time ago. In the past, I would have forgiven him and wanted him to live despite everything, but all my love toward him had died when he had thrown me into the freezer, knowing how traumatic it would have been for me.Blood dyed the floor red as I watched him collapse. Even though he was dead to me, my heart still ached. ‘No! William, you must live!’ I tried to say.Perhaps my prayers had worked because the butler discovered William in time, and he was saved. Then, I watched as he wailed in bed and screamed like a lunatic. He destroyed everything in his ward. The doctors and nurses did not dare approach him. The butler sighed long and hard as he braced himself before entering the ward. Then, he handed him a diary. “Mr. S
