CHAPTER 81: Fifteen Years

Our fifteenth wedding anniversary fell on a crisp October evening."Fifteen years," I said, getting ready. "How is that possible?""Mathematics," Alexander said, adjusting his cufflinks. "Time plus commitment equals fifteen years.""That's not romantic.""Fine. Fifteen years of waking up next to you. Fifteen years of loving you. Fifteen years of choosing you every single day. Better?""Much better."Luna appeared in our doorway. "You guys look fancy. Where are you going?""Anniversary dinner. Rosa is staying with you tonight.""Rosa is COOL. Can we order pizza?""Ask Rosa. It's her night to manage you three.""YES!" She ran off. "THOMAS! LEO! ROSA SAID WE CAN ORDER PIZZA!""I didn't say that!" Rosa called from downstairs."But you WILL, right?"Alexander laughed. "She's definitely your daughter. Negotiating everything.""Our daughter. She gets the negotiating from you."---We returned to where it all started. The hotel bar where we'd met fifteen years ago.It looked the same. Dim lig

CHAPTER 82: High School Graduation

Luna's high school graduation was surreal."How is she eighteen?" I asked Alexander for the hundredth time."Time. Mathematics. Biology.""That's not helpful.""It's accurate."I was forty-seven. Alexander was seventy-three. Our oldest daughter was about to graduate high school and leave for college.Somehow, impossibly, eighteen years had passed since that tiny preemie baby was born.Luna appeared in her cap and gown—red, her school colors."How do I look?""Like you're about to graduate high school and make me feel ancient.""Mama is NOT ancient. Mama is distinguished.""I'm forty-seven. I'm ancient.""Dada is seventy-three. THAT'S ancient.""Hey!" Alexander protested. "I'm distinguished too!""You're both distinguished. Now can we PLEASE take photos? My friends are waiting!"Thomas, fifteen and all teenage attitude, rolled his eyes. "Can we just GO already?"Leo, twelve and still our wild child, was adjusting his tie. "This thing is CHOKING Leo!""It's been five minutes. You'll sur

CHAPTER 83: Twenty-Five Years

Our twenty-fifth wedding anniversary fell on a crisp autumn evening.Twenty-five years.A quarter century of marriage."How are we this old?" I asked, getting ready."Mathematics again," Alexander said, fastening his watch. "Though at seventy-eight, I'm definitely feeling the mathematics.""You're not old. You're—""If you say distinguished one more time, I'm filing for divorce."I laughed. "You're... experienced?""Better. Barely."At fifty-two, I felt the years too. Reading glasses. A few gray hairs I refused to dye. Joints that complained on cold mornings. But we were here. Together. Twenty-five years later."Kids will be here soon," I said."All of them. Plus one.""Plus Marcus," I confirmed. "Luna's mysterious boyfriend we've only met twice.""Three times. Video call counts.""Fine. Three times. And now she's bringing him to our anniversary dinner.""You think he's going to propose?""Luna is twenty-three. Marcus is twenty-six. They've been dating two years. It's possible.""How

CHAPTER 84: The Wedding Day

Luna's wedding day dawned bright and clear.Perfect October weather. Crisp air. Golden sunlight. Like the universe was cooperating."She's getting married today," I said, staring at myself in the mirror.Fifty-three. Mother of the bride. When did that happen?"She is," Alexander confirmed, struggling with his bow tie. "Can you help me with this?""You've been wearing bow ties for sixty years.""Seventy-nine years, actually. And they still defeat me."I fixed his tie. Adjusted his boutonniere. Looked at my husband.Seventy-nine years old. Gray hair. Distinguished lines around his eyes. Still the most handsome man I'd ever seen."You look good," I said."For an almost-octogenarian?""For my husband of twenty-six years.""Twenty-six years. We're old, Bella.""We're experienced.""That's just a nice word for old."---Luna's suite was controlled chaos.Victoria managing hair and makeup. Catherine, now ninety-four and in a wheelchair but still sharp, supervising everything."The flowers ne

CHAPTER 85: Full Circle

The reception continued into the evening.Laughter. Dancing. Joy everywhere.I found myself on the balcony, needing a moment of quiet. The city stretched out below. Lights twinkling. Life continuing."Mind if I join you?"James. Now forty-nine. Gray at the temples. Happy."Of course not."We stood in comfortable silence."Hard to believe, isn't it?" he finally said."What?""All of this. Luna getting married. Our families. Being here together. Twenty-seven years ago, I was trying to destroy you in court.""Ancient history.""Is it? Sometimes I still can't believe you forgave me. That Dad forgave me.""You earned it. Every day for twenty-plus years. You showed up. Changed. Became someone worth forgiving.""Luna's speech. About choosing each other every day. She learned that from you and Dad.""She learned it from all of us. You and Sarah too. You choose each other. Your kids see that.""Emma is applying to law schools. Did Luna tell you?""She mentioned it. Columbia?""And Yale. And Ha

CHAPTER 86: Two Years Later

The phone rang at 6 AM.Never a good sign.I fumbled for it in the dark, careful not to wake Alexander."Mom?" Luna's voice was shaky. "Are you awake?"I sat up immediately, heart racing. "I am now. What's wrong? Are you hurt?""No. I'm fine. I'm... I'm pregnant."Silence.The word hung in the air between us."Mom? Did you hear me? I'm pregnant.""I heard you." I took a breath, tried to process. "Are you... how do you feel about that?""Terrified. Panicked. Completely freaking out.""Okay. Tell me what's going on.""I just made junior partner three months ago. JUNIOR PARTNER, Mom. I worked six years for this. Marcus is working eighty-hour weeks at the hospital. We barely see each other. Our apartment is the size of a shoebox. And now I'm PREGNANT and I don't know how to do this and—""Luna. Breathe.""I can't breathe! I'm PREGNANT! At the worst possible time! My career is just starting! We're not ready! We don't have a nursery or baby stuff or any idea what we're doing!"I smiled desp

CHAPTER 87: Telling Marcus

Marcus came home at 8:47 PM.I heard his key in the lock, the familiar sound of his messenger bag hitting the floor, his exhausted sigh.Thirty-six hours. He'd been at the hospital for thirty-six straight hours."Luna?" he called. "You still up?""In here." I was curled on the couch, pregnancy tests still on the coffee table. He appeared in the doorway. Scrubs wrinkled. Hair disheveled. Dark circles under his eyes. Still the most handsome man I'd ever seen."Hey," he said, smiling tiredly. "Sorry I'm so late. The surgery ran long, then there were complications, then—"He stopped. Saw my face."What's wrong? Are you okay?""I'm fine. Sit down.""Luna, you're scaring me. What happened?""Just sit. Please."He sat beside me, immediately reaching for my hand. "Talk to me."I gestured to the coffee table. "Look."He looked. Saw the three pregnancy tests. All positive.Very, very positive. The color drained from his face."Is this... are you...?""I'm pregnant."Silence.Complete silence.H

CHAPTER 88: The First Fight

Marcus woke up at 6 AM.Force of habit from years of residency.I felt him slip out of bed, heard him in the kitchen. At 6:30, he was back with a tray."Breakfast in bed for the mother of my child."I sat up, touched. Toast. Scrambled eggs. Orange juice. Ginger tea."You made ginger tea?""Googled 'morning sickness remedies' at 5 AM. Ginger was number one.""It's 6:30. You've been awake since 5?""Couldn't sleep. Too much to think about."That should have been my first warning sign.---By 9 AM, Marcus had created a spreadsheet. An actual spreadsheet."BABY PREPARATION TIMELINE" across the top in bold."Marcus. What is this?""Our plan. Look—Week 8, first doctor's appointment. Week 12, announce to family. Week 16, start nursery planning. Week 20, anatomy scan. Week 24—""You made a spreadsheet for my pregnancy?""Our pregnancy. And yes. We need organization.""It's been twelve hours since you found out.""Exactly. We're already behind."I stared at him. "Behind on what?""Everything!

CHAPTER 89: Doctor's Appointment

The OB's office was in Midtown.Bright. Clean. Walls covered in photos of babies. So many babies.I sat in the waiting room, filling out forms. Marcus beside me, reading every pregnancy magazine available."Did you know babies can hear in utero at eighteen weeks?" he said."I did not.""We should start playing music. Classical is supposed to help brain development.""Marcus. I'm seven weeks pregnant. The baby doesn't even have fully formed ears yet.""But when they DO form, we should be ready."I looked at him. He was nervous. Channeling anxiety into research."We're okay?" I asked quietly. He put down the magazine. Took my hand. "We're okay. Still figuring things out. But okay.""Good.""Good."The nurse called my name. "Luna Sterling?"We followed her back.---Height. Weight. Blood pressure. All normal."First pregnancy?" the nurse asked."First pregnancy," I confirmed."Exciting! Dr. Park will be with you shortly. You can change into the gown. Opening in front."After she left, I

Sunday dinner at my parents' house.A tradition that had survived twenty-seven years of family chaos.Every Sunday. Six PM. Or not ready? Or—""Luna. Breathe. They're going to be excited.""You don't know that.""I know your family. They're going to lose their minds. In a good way."I hoped he was right.---We arrived at 5:45.Mom answered the door, already knowing. She hugged me tight."How are you feeling?""Nauseous. Terrified. Excited.""Perfect.
