CHAPTER 21: THAT WAS BECOMING A PROBLEM.

~~~~~Meena~~~~~The gardens looked so empty, yes, exactly how I'd prefer them. No presence of any pack member, no curious employee, no interruptions. I walked further away from the main building, welcoming the breeze from the night, which brushed against my skin, cool and calm. I walked deeper, far enough that nobody would see or hear. Only then did I pull my phone out from my purse.The screen quickly brightened in my face. One important contact sat at the top. No name. Just a number. I kept my expression unreadable as I opened the conversation, and my fingers moved too quickly on it. The message was there, just short, simple, and direct. ‘Phase Two begins tomorrow.’I just stared at the screen for quite some moments, a small smile forming from my lips to the side of my mouth. Then, I pressed send, and the message disappeared from the keyboard, sent. Several seconds passed… then the phone vibrated. CHAPTER 22: DO I REALLY CARE?

~~~~Kane~~~~The first thing I realized about earlier today was that something was definitely going on with me. I didn't have a nightmare, no. It wasn't because of work. Not even because of the endless responsibilities ahead of me.It was because the first person that entered my mind wasn't Meena. It wasn't Ridgewood. It wasn't anything like business. It was Anya. That realization annoyed me immediately. I sat upright on my bed and rubbed my hand over my head, down to my face. This was getting so ridiculous right now. I had stood and watched her endure everything thrown at her for weeks. All the gossips and whispers about her. All the cold treatment from the pack, I just stood and watched. What amazes me was how she somehow still stands, and still works. Still contributing on Ridgewood as though she fully belonged. Most wolves would have broken and left already. Or rather spent their days crying and begging for sympathy. Anya did none of those things. That's what kept bothering me

CHAPTER 23: MY WORST MISTAKE.

~~~~Kane~~~~ I just moved on instinct. Hurriedly got the glass cup and filled it with water, moved towards her and handed it to her. I stood there, and watched. I watched as she drank it all and regained herself. That's when the coughing stopped. Relief washed over me immediately at the sight of that moment. She held the glass in her hands after taking its contents. She just stared afterwards, in silence. The room fell into an awkward silence. And there again, she did something that left me both in surprise and confusion. She turned her head, and looked at me now. Really looked at me. For some seconds, I could hardly believe that it was the same Anya I knew. “Why were you here?” She asked. That glued me to my spot. Because honestly? Why was I here in the first place? I didn't know myself. But then, she asked the second question that startled me and made me mute. “Why do you care all of a sudden?” That one actually hit harder than the latter. CHAPTER 24: WHEN REJECTION TURNS COLD.

~~~~Kane~~~~The next morning arrived with a strange sense of relief. Not that everything is now back to normal, no. Not even a bit. It was just that for the first time in days, I woke up and made a conscious decision. I was done thinking about Anya. I was so done questioning myself. I was done allowing her existence to crawl its way under my skin, and make me doubt any decisions which I've already made. I'd chosen Meena, and that should have been the end of it, right? So why did it never even felt like it was the end. I sat upright on the edge of my bed, rubbed both my hands through my head down to my face. The memory of that one night flashed in my mind. How Anya was coughing. How she really looked weak that night. How she asked me why I suddenly cared. That question irritated me more than I ever wanted to admit it. CHAPTER 25: THE COST OF HER PRESENCE.

~~~~~KANE~~~~~Meena was already completely dressed when she fully turned away from the mirror, and then she smoothed the fabric of her outfit with slow deliberate hands. The room was silent, safe for the faint sound of movement this beautiful woman took as she got ready for us to head out to Ridgewood Holdings today. But she paused when her eyes landed on me for some seconds, her expression— a bit amused. That was when it really came to my realization that I was just seated on the edge of the bed, wrapped in this towel, from thinking what those employees said between those walls that night, to looking at how beautiful Meena was while getting ready. But I failed to remember that I was also supposed to get ready for the day as well. Damn it. What is even wrong with you Alpha Kane? Meena's expression shifted, subtle, almost innocent. CHAPTER 27: A REASON TO DECIDE.

~~~~Anya~~~~Like other days, today was basically the same, or lemme say, today was worse. Lately, it's either one problem or the other. The energy in the atmosphere today didn't seem like something that'll prepare the day for good. The next moment, Leva rushed into our room as if something was pursuing after her. That alone already shows that something was wrong. The young maid was panting, and breathing heavily. Her cheeks turned red as if she'd been running for what felt like forever. She was supposed to be half way through the task I assigned her, why was she here again all of a sudden?I looked between Talia as she also looked confused, standing up from the chair she was seated on beside the window. “What happened?” Talia asked immediately.Leva leaned slightly along the door, and bent her figure, still trying to catch her breath. CHAPTER 28: MORE REASON TO DECIDE.

~~~~Anya~~~~The next morning felt so wrong, I noticed it the moment my legs stepped out into the pack house. Why must I keep feeling negative energy every damn morning? The air alone felt so cold. Too cold for the season we're in. Or maybe it only felt that way because of that heaviness that sat deeply inside my chest. The event that folded the previous day with Meena and the servant from the courtyard kept replaying in my head every now and then, that alone made sleep to refuse to come easily. I had to force my eyes shut throughout the night and keep my head from blowing up. Every damn time I closed my eyes, their faces resurfaced. Those mockery, and laughters. That amusement they had in their eyes. As if I had become some sort of entertainment for them. Like a rejected mate who didn't know when to disappear. A cautionary tale. The guard had informed us that the Alpha wanted us immediately in the conference room. I knew that event wouldn't go unattended to. Is it not Meena again?

CHAPTER 29: SMALL PIECES IN PLACE.

That humiliation I received earlier still clung to me like a second skin, it just refused to go no matter how hard I tried to push it away. I shut my eyes for a brief second, trying to breath, trying to exist. Just trying hard not to think or keep remembering everything, trying not to replay every single thing that had happened during the meeting. Those looks, those whispers, every cruel word. CHAPTER 30: GETTING CONTROL ALREADY.

~~~~Meena~~~~Right inside Kane's chambers, the morning sunlight found its way through the tall windows, bathing the entire room in a golden glow. Right beside him, I opened my eyes slowly and smiled. This right here, was exactly where I'd belonged. Not in some cramped room like some servants, or some corner in Ridgewood where forgotten wolves lived out their lives miserable. Or where I should have stood and watched another woman take what is mine.No! This is exactly where I belonged. In the Alpha's chamber, right on his bed. At his side and as his Luna.
