DarienAs we approached the ridge, we saw it … smoke. I had been braced for it since the mountain, but bracing for it didn’t stop the way my stomach turned seeing the sight. Knowing it would be there didn’t stop the hope that it wasn’t. That hope was gone now. And the smoke … was not hot. This was cold smoke, hours dead, the flat gray smell of a fire somebody had already beaten out.I felt my heart rate pick up as I braced for the scene we were coming up on. Keanu came up over the last rise and tipped his wing, and I looked down at Moonridge. My eyes widened in shock. It was standing. The perimeter wall had gone in two places and both breaches were stuffed with vehicles and timber, parked nose to nose by somebody who had done it on purpose. Floodlights on poles. A generator hammering away somewhere behind the lodge. The lodge itself had a hole punched through its roof and most of its windows gone. The row of houses behind it had come through with scorch up their walls and their doors

Darien“He is young and he is unreasonably stubborn, so yes.” She lifted the edge of the dressing, looked, put it back. “He will not use that arm properly for a long time, and he will not like being told so.”I stood over him a while.Four nights ago I listened to this man confirm on a phone that everything was quiet, and I spent the rest of that call with my beast moving under my skin because of the way his voice sounded when he said my mate’s name. I have not changed my mind about him. I am never going to change my mind about him.But he put his body between a demon and Leah’s brother, and he is lying here with his chest opened up for it. And that is something I will always keep in mind about him.“Whate

LeahHe did not want to go inside, which I understood, and he did not say where he wanted to go, which I also understood, so I walked next to him along the wall where the wind comes through and you can see the whole lower terrace.“We lost men,” he said.“I know.”“Nineteen.” He said it the way you set something heavy down on a table. “Doyle had them, and Doyle is one of the nineteen.”I had not known that. I knew the gap had held and I knew roughly what it cost to hold it.“Eleven of them have family inside this kingdom,” he said. “A few have nobody listed, which I do not accept and which is going to be looked into properly before I sig

LeahHe did not pretend he had not heard me.“Leah.”“I am not talking about tonight. You are going back in the morning, I know that, I am not stupid.” I turned so I could look at him properly. “I mean after. You have a hole in your wall and no Beta and a healer running on nothing, and every non-warrior you are responsible for is here. Bring them all here. You should be here too.” I made myself say the rest. “There is land on the east side of the ridge that nobody is using. You could put Moonridge down on it and it would be a pack here. And I could walk to you.” My voice did something I did not authorize. “Anton. I could see you every day.”He put his head back against the wall and looked up at the ceiling. All that noise went on aro

LeahDarien was waiting in the courtyard the next morning, and he was not alone.Six of them lined up behind him with bags at their feet. I knew what I was looking at before anybody said a word, because you can tell. I smiled and walked to his side.Anton came out with his coat over his shoulder. No longer using a sling or a brace.“No,” he said.“I have not asked you anything yet.”“You are about to. The answer is no. And I would like it understood that it is no with gratitude.”“Six,” Darien said. “Kesler has the lot of them and you will like him by the second day, which is sooner than most people mana
