As we drove out to the meeting Emily quizzed me on the ten wolves she had picked out of the stack. I wanted to remember name, rank, job, and something personal about all of them. The Council agreed and they started to discuss which security measures to institute in the den. I wondered how the pack would feel about cameras everywhere. I didn't think they would really mind, but it would be a change, which would probably unnerve them.I watched quietly as the meeting continued. It was one of so many. I was glad for Emily now. When I zoned out I could always trust her notes about what had happened were accurate. I felt caged and just couldn't shake the feeling. Meeting rooms were not intended for wolves, I decided.The next several weeks were frustrating. I continued to learn all about the pack which was good, but my night time excursions got more and more frequent. Even with Emily helping me all day, and she was a help, I went outside every night to sleep.With that in mind, I was surprised to wake up in our bed. It had been a long time since I'd woken up here. Joel and I left the den about midmorning. We were headed deep into pack lands to spend several days just being wolves. He designated his highest ranking Betas to run the pack in his absence.Nate was being left in charge and on the surface he had the same unfazed facade. I knew from what Joel told me he hated this, though.Nate enjoyed his position and the level of authority he usually had, but in his heart he needed an Alpha. No part of him felt comfortable playing this part when Joel stepped out. As we ran from the den, I saw Nate take a shuddering breath and start to issue orders to the Betas surrounding him.I felt guilty about taking Joel away from the pack, especially now of all times. They were nervous enough with all the new technology being installed and the security changes. When the next wave came I didn't fight it. I felt Joel. It was like I was Joel. I could feel his heartbeat and the warmth of my back on his stomach. His need to be inside me was overwhelming. Once he moved to fill me I heard myself growl at the pleasure.I wanted to feel him to control me completely, but I wasn't sure how to ask for more than he was already giving. As we ran back toward the den I contemplated our relationship. Joel seemed lost in his own thoughts. It was comfortable silence between us.Suddenly Joel came to a screeching halt. I followed suit and watched him. He was eyeing the ground around us suspiciously. His ears and tail were up in warning. I watched as he bared his fangs and a low growl rose in his chest.I tried to understand what was upsetting him. It was just us in the middle of an empty clearing. I had to stop thinking with my human mind and allow the wolf lead. I was missing something crucial.Letting my animal instincts flow, I concentrated on the area around us. I started to see what Joel was seeing, a group had been here. There were fresh tracks in the ground, some were human others weren't. They seemed to lead into the clearing, cluster, and then go toward the den. There was no scent to indicate anyone had been here, though.I understood with striking clarity. Something was attacking the den under the cover of that

'Joel,' I called, 'they are after our females. You have to stop them.''Get back to the den, you are out matched. I know they are after females,' he sent back sounding irate.To hell with him, I thought as I barreled into the slower wolf ahead of me. He dropped the female and tried to come around to face me. I tore out his throat before he could even start to change direction.Something sharp and painful hit me from behind and I turned to see the five had caught up to us. The fastest one of them had sunk his teeth into my hind leg. The others surrounded me and prepared to attack.Despite the pain I shifted back to the hybrid form and used my hands to disengage my opponent. Before I threw him off of me completely I shoved my sharp claws into his chest and tore at his heart.I battled with the remaining four wolves and killed one more before reinforcements showed up. I was impressed with her forethought and told her so. She seemed happy to be complimented."It is my honor to serve my pack to my highest ability," she said turning out of the room.I would have been happy to sit and watch Joel, but Nate was standing expectantly at the door when the healer left. She didn't notice the dark look on Joel's face or she probably would have stopped talking. "The mothers downstairs all think you are their new hero. All the work to help poor Emily, going after Leidy and Sarah when you saw them with the rogues. They can't stop singing your praises," she laughed.Nate approached cautiously from the side, correctly interpreting Joel's body language."They are ready when you are, sir," Nate said formally, taking several steps back after he spoke.Joel seemed to compose himself before shifting back into his wolf form. "I hope my mate's half as fiery as you when I find her," he sighed. "She's being a little devil and hiding out. Any trackers Joel isn't using, you tell him to send my way.
