Dona's POV I changed into the bottoms I'd worn from the hospital when I went to see Piper. They were wrinkled and gross, but they'd have to do. Dona's POV Peter did WHAT? I was absolutely, utterly taken aback. My brain couldn't process what I'd just heard. What did she mean, Peter came back? "That dipshit!" August snarled. Dona's POV I stayed in my room all day. I didn't talk to anybody. Not even August, who kept knocking on my door and telling me he was worried about me. I just lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, trying to process everything that had happened. By evening, I couldn't take it anymore. I called Piper. "Dona?" she answered immediately. "What's wrong?" "Everything!" I wailed. "Peter came back. Can you believe the nerve of that asshole?" "What?" I told her everything, how my mom had let him back into the house, and how he'd hit August. How my mom kept defending him, saying she had her reasons but never actually telling me what those reasons were. "I can't believe she's being so gullible and stupid," I told my friend. "She keeps saying there's a reason she's doing this, but she won't tell me what it is. What kind of reason could possibly justify this?" "I don't know," Piper said softly. "Can I come over?" I asked. August's POV After Dona left, I decided to go pack my own bags. I remembered how my dad had been able to access my hotel suite earlier and made a mental note to tell the receptionist to tighten security. No one gets in unless I authorize it. The last thing I needed was him showing up unannounced again. As I walked down the hallway toward my room, I passed the room my dad shared with Samantha. The door was slightly open. Dona's POV It was Wednesday night when Piper dragged me to the college mixer thrown by one of the smaller student clubs. She'd used some excuse about "networking credit" or "building our social résumé" or something equally ridiculous. I didn't buy it, but I went anyway because staying cooped up in her apartment was starting to make me feel like a hermit. The event was semi-formal. Music thumped through the speakers, food was laid out on tables along the walls, and way too many boys were trying to impress girls with terrible pickup lines.
